REGULATIONS
Permitting required for both State and Federal Agencies
Ambient Air Quality Standards and Emission Standards must be met through monitoring and tracking on a monthly basis
• HEALTH EFFECTS
Chronic intoxication can lead to:
cancer, liver disease, cardiovascular diseases
Single acute dose can lean to:
Cognitive tasks being performed quicker but with an increased level of error (e.g. drinking and driving)
• ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS
VOCs => some create ozone, contribute to global warming, toxicity, and odors
PM => air quality deterioration (e.g. decreased visibility)
CO => toxic to humans
• CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES
PM emissions historically controlled through the use of bagfilters
VOCs and CO historically not controlled
Many new technologies to control emissions which usually incorporate filters or heat exchangers or both
e.g. C.A.S.T. Inc. Air Scrubbers
• NONCOMPLIANCE
Department of Environmental Protection will usually:
-issue a notice of noncompliance
-issue a warning letter
-file an enforcement case
Notification to the appropriate authority is necessary if:
Equipment is altered or replaced
New equipment is installed that is a source of air pollution
