5/05/03 Sedin Twins Excited about Arrival
In a blockbuster trade with the San Jose Sharks the Canadiens aquired the talented Sedins, but they team lost franchise player and a fan favorite in Mike Riberio. It was no secret that Riberio was struggling with the team and nothing the team could do could get him out of his slump so the move was coming. The Canadiens also traded Alexsei Selezov and their 1st in 2007 and 3rd in 2007 with 1 mill to cover some of Ribiero's Contract which will go up next season. The Sedins, who struggled with the Sharks partly because they bounced back and forth on the 4th line and the minors, hope to break out as superstars as they will get a huge increase in ice time with the Canadiens on the 1st line. "We are definetely excited to come over to the Canadiens", said Henrik Sedin, "We won the Shafer with the Sharks, but now both of us want to prove that we are what everybody expected us to be and that is good players in this league." The Canadiens certainly hope so, because the offense is struggling and right now the stellar play of Peter Hamrlik and strong defensive play is keeping the team alive. "What a difference a year makes", said Coach Brian Trottier, "Last year we depended on our offense primarily to get our team into the playoffs, this year we've turned that around and our goaltending and our defense are carrying us so far and our offense is what is hurting us."
4/23/03 Canadiens trying to salvage season early
The Canadiens have put themselves in the hole again starting early. They have been playing strong teams and can't seem to get giong. The top line has all, but dissapeared with Ribeiro only scoring one goal. "It is unnacceptable", said a angry GM Brian Hoff, "He is paid to come here and put up points. So far he has been a huge dissapointment. Another downer has been the play of Shane Endicott at center with him." "We really need to put up a stronger effort than we are", said a frustrated Bryan Trottier. Lars Jonsson is also dissapointing fans as he has only showed glimmers of becoming an offensive force at the blueline. The Canadiens have decided to break up their normal line combinations. Manny Malhotra and Martii Jarventie, Jarventie has played well in the games up, was sent to the minors and Scott Cameron and Kenny Jonsson(brought in via trade) was put in. Both those players are good leaders and should help the team. Endicott was sent to the second line to play with Oleg Kvasha and Brian Gionta, a former line that had some success. Standout young player Zoloterevs has cracked the 1st line and will play along Klyzamin and the struggling Riberio. All these changes will have to pay off if the team expects to make it to the post-season.
4/14/03 Rookies Prove Strong in Opening Sim
Sergei Klyzamin and Alex Buterlin looked strong in the opening sim and and both scored 6 points in 7 games for the Canadiens only finishing behind Oleg Kvasha. "Its very important to see your young guys do well", said GM Kripple, "Zoloterevs did it for us last season, and now it looks like these two will be good for us this season." Klyzamin and Buterlin were both brought in through trades this season and last. Ciernik left the team along with a 1st to the Red Wings to pick up the skilled young right winger. Buterlin has an impressive 78 SC that will make him very effective in this league. The Canadiens still haven't passed that .500 barrier that upsets GM Brian Hoff, but hopefully this is the year as the Candiens finished 2-2-3.
4/12/03 Draft Day
The Canadiens are pleased with draft day selections. The Canadiens picked Mika Nuutinen, Brandon Brown, Aleksei Selezov and Corey Martineau were selected by the Canadiens. "These young players we hope will be excellent additions to our line-up and we think we were very luck that Mika Nuutinen made it all the way to 14th overall", said GM Brian Hoff after a post- draft press confernce, "The GM of the Devils hinted that Brandon Brown would be a good choice and we are happy to get him." The Devils also made a deal with them that brought Scott Cameron for Cameron Mann. Scott will give the team a viable 4th line center next season when Francis' skills will be outdated. Check out the Quebec page to see a prospect report on all new draftees.
4/8/03 Ron Francis Returns to Canadiens
Ron Francis Returns to the Canadiens for his second stint. During Season 1, former GM Dave aquired him and in 76 games he posted an impressive 33 goals and 83 points. "Well its pretty apparent that I'm not that kind of player any more", said Ron Francis, "and that I'm gonna have to probably play on the 3rd or 4th line, but i feel that this team will see better days." "The organization is happy to have gotten a player like Ron Francis", said GM Brian Hoff, "He will bring his experience and excellent leadership to a young team that lacks a standout leader like Ron is. We know he can set a positive example for our young players and thats why we were happy to have him." The Canadiens are hoping that they can get past the .500 mark this season and with the pending manual rerates looming we are not sure which way are franchise is gonna go, but hopefully its north.
