My Hunt Story

Well I have to tell you that all would be quite
jealous if I shared this story with hunters or huntresses
that have hunted for years and not even seen
anything.
It seems that this story stays so fresh in my
mind.
On October 4th of 1997 we arrived at our cabin in
northeast MI. at about 4:30pm. By the time we got unpacked
and ready to go out it was about 6:oopm. This was
my very first time hunting with a bow so while I was
heading towards my stand I went through all the things
that would make me a successful huntress in my head. I
got up in my stand and got everything ready. I
checked my watch and it was 6:25pm. My stand faces
(northwest) a beautiful creek that runs through our property.
The sunset was absolutly awesome that evening. The
temp was extremely warm that day also. To the north of
me I heard the familiar sounds of twigs breaking,
then a splash, which that told me whatever it was, was
headed my way. I did start to get quite nervous but I
slowly put my head down and done my breathing, (I knew
those classes would come in handy one day, since they
didn't work during the birth of my children....LOL!) As
I rose my head I looked to the north and there they
were, 3 of them, 1 doe and 2 bachelors. The rule for
taking a buck on our property is 6 or better, I'm sure
you know why. I waited patiently for them to
approach. I let her get comfortable on the bait pile,
(thats when we were allowed to bait in small
portions)What seemed like 5 hours was only 5 minutes. She was
facing me at this time. The 2 bucks finally came in and
tried to eat but the doe would not let them, she
charged them off. When she returned to eating, she was
broadside, her head was facing left with her left foot
forward. As for the rule of thumb I though to myself "It
doesn't get any better than this!" From my stand to the
pile is 31 yards. I drew back, aimed for the kill
zone, and released. The arrow went right through her
and she bolted west into the tags. I watched and
listened. The tremors at that point were almost
overwhelming. I waited about 10 minutes so I could regain my
composure. I checked my watch and it was 7:04pm. I headed
down the tree, got the arrow and put it in my quiver.
There was alot of blood, I followed the death trail
in the tags for about 35 yards and low and behold
there she was....DOWN and DEAD. At that point I
examined the entrance and exit wounds and predicted a
double lung shot. I gutted her and confirmed the double
lunger. I went back to the cabin and got the quad, I
brought her in, hung her on the buck pole. The excitement
was extremely exhausting, I then collapsed on the
chair and went through the whole thing in my head. Then
I remembered....THE VIDEO!!! We had set up a tripod
to video tape the hunt. I went back to my stand and
got the camera, brought it in and watched it.
"Phenomenal" is the only word that comes to mind when I think
of that day. The next morning we all had heart, rice
and eggs, that is our ritual. So here you have
it, I hope you enjoy!
Thanks
DAWN
