True Artificial Reality

True Artificial Reality

Today's digital computers use digital bits to process information. Tomorrow's quantum computers will use quantum bits, also called qubits, to process information. And just as today's recording devices use digital bits to make a recording of something, tomorrow's recording devices will use quantum bits, or qubits, to make a recording of something. I believe that someday, when they are able to teleport a person for real from one place to another, that quantum teleportation will be used along with quantum computers. In fact, I believe the two technologies will merge. Quantum teleportation may progress to the point(forward:1000 years) where a large object(human) can be scanned in, while a qubit recorder captures quantum data necessary, that when played back through a receiving teleporting machine, will produce copies of that human in that machine. This scheme may not work, however, because the no-cloning theorem might be violated. However, it's a fair bet that when science gets smart enough to teleport a person, science will also be smart enough to create a machine that can make instant copies of that person!

Since the data recalled are qubits, why not instead feed the data directly into a quantum computer where e-versions of humans(and all other physical objects) can comfortably reside? This would take artificial reality to a new level: True Artificial Reality. If God doesn't put a stop to this it's no telling what scientists will do! Seriously, I believe that God wouldn't mind, since sinners can be saved even in a computer world!

I used to question whether I was living in the real world, or whether I was living in some kind of virtual reality! Good scientific question or good dose of insanity?! It depends, of course, on what your personal philosophy is. A real virtual reality world with real people living inside that virtual world will only be possible if humanity doesn't destroy itself with a nuclear war, because extinction of the human race would mean an end to all future scientific progress, and an end to all the miracles that this future science would bring. I can't bear the thought! But here's the fun part: once the world can reasonably say that it has rid itself of all dangerous weapons of mass destruction, especially nukes, anything is technologically possible! No feat is too far-fetched! And all people living then will know about the possibility that she or he may quite well be living in a virtual reality world! The possibilities are unlimited. Technical question: Can computers think the way we do? AND FEEL? Well, maybe not. the human brain is a biological entity, and good ole Mother Nature may know the secret to the mind better than we do! But not to worry! They will build biological computers, if they have to. By the time science is smart enough to upload a human mind, they will also know the right way to build a conscious computer!! Pleasant dreams! Don't take too many red pills!!

A Private Artificial Reality
A private(or solitary) artificial reality would be one with only one actual person living in it(what they call a me-simulation). All other people he interacted with would be illusions, or simulacra, which means simulations. These non-living simulations are also called shadow-people or zombies. However these shadow-people could become momentarily conscious and could be brought to life! This would allow the person living inside his solitary world to have a real conversation, love affair, or whatever with his shadowy companions. A shadowy-companion need not be a human. A simulated cat could become real while I am petting it, only to turn back into a full-fledged simulation later, for example! A me-simulation is also called a solitary matrix, with only one real person living inside. The other shadowy inhabitants could become real as needed, cutting down the number of calculations for the futuristic computer to perform, as I said earlier. But wouldn't it be wrong to temporarily bring a shadow person to life only to take that life back? Perhaps the "shadow people" could be made intelligent, but not fully conscious. If I found myself living in a solitary matrix, I definitely would want my shadow-friends to be at least somewhat conscious! If, on the other hand, the shadows were brought to life for only a little while, that would be sad, because I would never know whether the happy little kittens playing in front of me were simulations that had been brought to life so that they could enjoy their kitty-play, or if they had already turned back into mere simulations again. And if I knew I was living in this kind of world, it would take quite a while for me to get used to it!! (A simulacrum is a single lifeless simulation, kinda like the woman in the red dress, in the first Matrix movie)

A Public Artificial Reality
A public artificial reality would be one in which two or more uploaded people live together in a shared virtual environment. For me, that's a much happier scenario. This is what they usually call an ancestor-simulation. A matrix-like world teeming with simulated ancestors living together inside, also called a teeming matrix. By "simulated ancestors", I do not mean simulacra, or shadow-people, but real, actual people living inside the computer program, made to believe that they are living in an earlier time, say the 21st century. These "simulated" ancestors are really not simulations at all. Their heritage is simulated. Their role as a 21st century character is simulated. Their physical bodies are simulated, as they have no bodies, since they are part of a computer program. Their hands, their faces, their bodies are part of a "residual self-image" as so well said by Morpheus in The Matrix. Their clothes are simulated. So these people do not have physical bodies. But their thoughts, and their feelings are real. This makes them real people. People of this sort are called "sims", short for simulations, although they are not really simulations at all. Some of us like to believe that we are sims, living out our lives in an ancestor-simulated computer program! One witty guy said that if you want to believe that you are a sim, go right ahead! But he knows that he is a real person(person living in the real world), and definitely not a sim!!!

Real Extreme Technology
There is a BIG difference between two popular ideas, discussed amongst artificial reality enthusiasts. The most popular of these two ideas says that in the future, you will be able to have electrodes implanted directly into your brain, giving you a true virtual reality experience that allows you to directly experience virtual surroundings, objects, and so on without those cumbersome gloves, goggles, or whatever. The other idea, and the one that fascinates me the most, involves the actual transfer of a person's mind and soul directly into the computer's own memory bank, allowing that person to take on an entirely new form, one that is no longer physical, but after being transferred into the computer, the person becomes a digital being, living entirely inside the artificial reality computer program. This person would still feel as if she or he possessed a physical body! But can we ever hope to someday invent such extreme technology? The two technologies mentioned above are way beyond what we can do today. The hopes are high, I believe, because one cannot help but conclude that knowledge shall be increased...and increased! Both people and computers will become smarter...and smarter. Together, human and computer, each one connected and dependent on the other in ways hitherto not imagined, will ultimately develop the real extreme virtual realities that we can only dream about today!

I have had paranormal experiences; somehow, I still believe very much my world is real. One such paranormal experience is when, as a teen, with the help of tinfoil, I connected flashlight batteries to the prongs of a wire leading to a alternating current (AC) only AM radio, and got music. It didn't surprise me then, because I wasn't aware at the time that something like this wasn't supposed to happen. Of course, I could be experiencing a false memory.
I don't check the email that much, but I sometimes can be reached at

Some final thoughts: scientists who work in the field of A.I. (Artificial Intelligence), and scientists who work in the field of robotics love to speculate about whether the world is real, whether someday machines will take over, and even become human, i.e., steal our humanity away from us. But, if I am in a machine, and don't know it, or hooked up to a machine, that is, "plugged in" and don't even know it, or if I am even the machine itself, that does nothing to take my humanity away from me. I still experience pleasure, pain, desires, fears, still love to eat ice cream, still am searching for much better treatments for my physical and mental illnesses, still like the ladies, still love cats and dogs(and rabbits), still feel the need to pray sometimes. You get the picture? Inside or outside THE DREAM, the world is still very much real. Inside or outside THE DREAM, one still wants to have a happy and successful life. On the other hand, it is true that there is a scary side to believing you, or I, am living inside an artificial reality world. But when I realised that this artificial world would be created for our survival as a species, I felt liberated from the spooky aspects that come with inhabiting an artificial world.

Spiritual Aspects of Artificial Reality
Also, I wanted to show people the spiritual side of artificial reality. Suppose, for instance, the advanced humans of the distant future(some call them posthumans) who will have God-like power, suppose these posthumans are a deeply religious people! Maybe they would want us to have an afterlife after we die in our virtual reality world. Then Heaven is real after all, albeit a digital one! Through science humans will develop a God-like ability to do just about anything, including creating a simulation of our early 21st century. When we go to church, we would be living in this ancestor-simulated world. Like I said at the beginning of this article, sinners can be saved even in a computer world! The same religions that people practiced in the real world can be practiced in a simulated world. The advanced societies who are generating this simulation, this world we live in, are most likely deeply religious in that each person there has mutual respect for each other, and has high moral and ethical standards. By then, all doomsday scenarios will have passed. Long before any society creates what some call an ancestor-simulation the world will have gotten rid of dangerous weapons. The human race will have evolved to the point that everybody can trust each other. Dangerous societies will fade away, and become extinct, and only the super rational and super moral types will have survived.

And Finally
Finally, I do realise that future technology, if used wrongly, can indeed be scary. Technology is a Genie in a bottle that scientists recently opened up. Now that this Genie is loose, we must be very careful what miracles we ask this Genie to perform!
