Whelley St Stephens Amateur Junior Football Club
It is believed Whelley Amateur Junior Football Club was originally formed back at the turn of the century. A team played competitive football in the Wigan and District League at the site that is now called St Stephens School. The side developed its membership and branched out into other sports.
Around 1928 the 40 or so members of Whelley St Stephen’s Cricket Club played on the field. Their pitch ran along side the original football pitch and parallel to the other town’s main interest, yes you guessed it Egg Chasing.
Not a lot is known about the rugby team other than it was a church side and most local residents remember some Saturday morning games.
In the 50’s Whelley AJFC became part of a newly formed Football Club, Shamrock Rovers. This team played every Saturday morning in the Wigan and District Borough League. It is not certain how long they lasted or played for, but it seems they played on for at least 10 years.
The current Whelley St Stephens AJFC was formed in June 2004. One of the main factors behind the rekindling of this 76 year old Club was the fact that so many children in the area wanted to join a local team……and play football.
The Club colours are as near to the original Whelley team as possible. It is know that the 1928 side played in white shirts with a black hoop across and black shorts, black socks, and indeed it is believed the Rovers played in the same colours. The current Club is now following in this tradition.
Some 85 Members attend the Saturday morning training session come rain or shine, playing on the same ground that their Great Grandfathers possibly did.
Of the 7 sides which make up our club, Whelley Aces and Whelley Best play in the Wigan and District Youth Football League and are currently placed 3rd and 5th (no mean feat in the first season). The under 7s and under 8s games are played on Sunday morning and have a good crowd attendance.
The newly formed Whelley Girls team is about to start playing in the Bolton and Bury Girls League.
Member of Parliament Neil Turner is not only a Wigan Athletic supporter but also a patron of our Club, being seen frequently at both.
Currently the field on which we play is under threat from the Lancashire Education Authority which plan to sell the land for building. We would ask you to support this local club and stop the plans going ahead.
