'Mommy did the Grinch steal Santa?'
The other night when I was making dinner for my children, my 4 year old came up to me and said “Mommy what happen to Santa Clause?” I was puzzled by the question. I asked him what he meant by “what happened to Santa Clause?” He said “did the Grinch steal him or have I been bad?” I asked him why he thought that. He told me “because Santa did not bring me, Sissy and little bubby any gifts last year and thought something had happened and was wondering if Santa was stolen or maybe he thought I was bad.” I told him “No you have not been a bad boy and I’m sure the Grinch did not steal Santa, that maybe Santa just did not get the letter that we had moved.” I did not have the heart to tell him that it was because I had no money to buy any gifts for him and his siblings, and if I had told him that then he would know that there was no Santa Clause; I did not want to have him not believe in Christmas at such a young age. My son walked a way believing that Santa did not have his new address and went to his room to have his older sister help him write a letter to Santa to make sure he knew where to bring their gifts. My 4 year old gave me the letter to send to Santa Clause and said “now we will get our gifts.” But because my ex-husband does not send child support again my children will go with out and again Santa Clause will let down the three most important children in her life. I go to bed at night with the question my little 4 year old asked me just 3 days ago “Mommy what happen to Santa Clause?” And on Christmas day I will have to face the question once again when his little face is filled with disappointment and his beautiful blue eyes are filled with tears when he comes down the hall way and sees no Tree and no Presents and the Stockings empty. I guess I could tell him that Santa is broke and maybe next year he will come. There is always next year ……. Isn’t there? Or maybe I could just say that the Grinch stole Santa Clause.
