Saved By The Bell: Seasons One and Two![]()
Main Feature:
First and foremost, I must say to the naysayers, SBTB is a brilliant show. There. Sure, it's cheesy, corny, and in a way pathetic, but hey. It's a show that anyone between the ages of 13 to 18 can relate to, and it's a good one at that.
The show is about a group of six youngsters who all attend Bayside High School in California. The characters, of which you probably already know, include Zack, the main character in the show who sometimes does pieces to camera, and introduces the show and such. AC Slater is his muscle-bound rival in his battle to win Kelly, the most popular girl in the school's, heart. Zack's best friend is the nerd that is Screech, the class clown who is forever vying for Lisa's heart - a battle he never did win with the school's shopping-addicted fashion-conscious lady. And finally there's Jessie, the one who believes in womens' rights and never takes sides. They're all students who principal Mr Belding continuously tries to connect with throughout the series at school, and outside of school Max the magician gives the guys advice and entertainment at restaurant "The Max".
Sound good? It is, though I recommend watching the show first instead of buying this on a whim, it's an acquired taste. The set contains the complete first two seasons; hopefully the rest will be released soon. These 35 episodes are all brilliant, there's not a stinker there; particular favourites of mine include one I'd never seen before due to Nickelodeon UK's censoring rules over here, "Jessie's Song", in which Jessie gets addicted to caffiene pills; "The Friendship Business" in which the gang splits off into two rival teams selling friendship-related accessories; "The Gift" in which Screech discovers he can tell the future; and "Slater's Friend", in which his chameleon dies.
Overall, simply excellent stuff 10/10
Packaging:
To be honest, the packaging is hardly great. It is in accordion style, like "The Simpsons", but it's only cardboard with a little plastic. There's a place for a booklet insert, but there isn't one; I guess NBC/Lions Gate couldn't be bothered in the end. the disc and package design is nice, with yellow, red and blue most prominent, with parts of the cardboard including pictures, and basic episode details (title, airdate, writer, director) - that's all, no episode guide (try http://www.savedbythebelltrivia for one) or anything like that. No slipcase, either. Nice cover design though. 6/10
Audio:
This sounds great on DVD. Not anyting brilliant, but better than it ever was/is/will be on DVD - DD 2.0. 7/10
Video:
There are signs of grain, compression and sometimes edge enhancement - but nothing too bad. Good for a TV show from 13 years ago. 7/10
Price:
I got mine from www.playusa.com for £24.99 (plus £8.60 customs charge!) totalling £33.59 in my case; technically it cost £24.99 though (free postage). Great for almost 13 hours of entertainment, considering if it was released over here, it'd cost more like £49.99. 9/10
Extras:
None, nada, zilch. Booo. 0/10
Overall:
A great show presented well on DVd with no extras.. I'll give it 8/10
Family-Friendly Rating:
Very family friendly, practically no content unsuitable for kids of all ages. I'll give it All.
