Only Fools and Horses: Series 6
Main Feature:
Only Fools and Horses is, quite frankly, the essential British sitcom. There's probably not a person in the UK who hasn't seen this - the 1996 Christmas Special got almost half the population - 27.1 million - watching. So, why? Well, that's an easy question. The perfect casting of David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst combined with John Sullivan's impeccable scripts equal a timeless and classic show.
This set includes all six episodes from series 6 - the first series of 50 minute episodes. There are only six episodes in the series, but they're all classic. My personal favourites are "The Unlucky Winner Is..", an unfortunate tale of Rodney having to pretend to be 15 in order to get the Trotters a holiday to Mallorca; "Danger UXD", in which Del gets his hands on some exploding - and potentially lethal - adult dolls; and finally, "Chain Gang" - a story of the Trotter conmen being conned themselves. The other three on here are all brilliant too - their names are "Yuppy Love", "Sickness And Wealth" and "Little Problems".
Here's a grade out of 100 for each ep:Yuppy Love: 90% Danger UXD: 98% Chain Gang: 96% The Unlucky Winner Is..: 98% Sickness and Wealth: 94% Little Problems: 90%
As you can see, there's really nothing bad to say here.
The great characters extend beyond Del and Rodney though. There's also war veteran Uncle Albert, who is obsessed with starting sentences with 'During the war..'; Trigger, Del's incedibly slow mate who insists on calling Rodney 'Dave'; Boycie, another friend of Del's who's the posh guy in town; his wife, Marlene; Mike the barman, usually a neutral force; Denzil, another mate of del's, who's forever being conned and used by him - like the rest; Mickey, a friend of Rodney's; and finally Jevon, Mickey's mate. This series also introduces Rodney's girl Cassandra - whom he meets in episode one of the series, and marries her in the last episode of the series. Fast going, eh?
Theres really nothing else to say about this; the ultimate Brit TV programme. i couldn't give this any less than 10/10.
Packaging:
A nice snapper case, with discs on either side of the open case. The discs are held in place very well, though unfortuantely the discs design is very plain. There's a single flyer, with the chapter index listed on it. There are unfortuantely no chapter stops after the openings of the eps, but that's not too much of a problem. 8/10
Audio:
Just stereo.. what do you exect? 5/10
Video:
4:3, typical TV frame. But hell, the picture's still very clear, with very little grain, and no imperfections whatsoever considering the 15-year age of the show. good. 7/10
Price:
£20 is WAY overpriced; look around and try £15. An RRP of £15'd be better though. 6/10
Extras:
Well..Hearing Impaired English Subtitles Regions 2 *and* 4(!) Menus Scene Selections
Yet again, the BBC underwhelms us. 1/10
Overall:
A brilliant show on a rubbish DVD, bar video. Damn the extras-unfriendly BBC, yet again! 74%
Average:
61%
Family-Friendly Rating:
Guidance due to some mild language and a couple mild sexual refs.
