Main Feature:
Friends is most certainly one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. After ten years, it finally draws to a close this Spring, but this DVD set is really a chance to see how it all began, back in 1994 and 1995.
For those who don't know, Friends is a sitcom about six friends who live in apartments nearby each other, and follows their day to day lives - relationships, parents, pet monkeys.. It stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox (now Cox-Arquette) and Lisa Kudrow as Rachel, Monica and Phoebe respectively; and David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry and Matt Le Blanc as Ross, Chandler, aand Joey. It is a little overrated, especially the later seasons, but this season really si great, and is a must for any comedy fan.
My personal favourites of the set include:The One With The Blackout: During a powercut, Chandler contemplates making a move on a woman he likes; The One With All The Poker: The girls take on the guys in a major stakes game of poker; The One Where The Monkey Gets Away: Ross' monkey gets away, and the gang have to try everything in their power to get it back; The One With The Thumb: Phoebe finds a thumb in her soda and gets compensation; The One With The Butt: Joey gets a film role.. as Al Pacino's rear..
Top. 9/10
Audio:
Typical for a TV release; stereo. Since this is a dialogue-driven show, it's fine though. 7/10
Video:
Standrard 4:3 aspect ration, nice clear picture, but there is actually a little grain and a few blurry and enhanced lines here and there. Respectable, could be better. 6/10
Price:
Now avaliable for around £17 online - simply excellent, comapred to the original £90 or so. 9 hours for a mere £20 odd.9/10
Extras:
One area where the discs are certainly lacking, unfortunately. We only get static menus and episode selections (not even chapter stops), subtitles in various languages, and the Rembrandts' full music video of the theme, "I'll Be There For You", featuring the cast. Low marks. 2/10
Packaging:
Nice, albeit not tough enough, cardboard box encasing, holding three double sided discs, each in separate unique 'pull-back front' style opening boxes. 8/10
Overall:
An excellent series on a rather disappointing disc. 63%
Family-Friendly Rating:
Teen, for some mild language and moderate sex.
