Open All Hours: Series 1

  • 175 mins
  • 1 disc
  • 4:3 aspect ratio
  • Mono

    Main Feature:
No doubt about it, Open All Hours, with Ronnie Barker and David Jason, is one of the nation's best sitcoms. This single-disc set brings you the first six innuendo-filled episodes, in their original form.
Over the almsot 30 years since it began, OAH hasn't lost any of its comedic appeal. The episodes here will still bring tears of laughter to many, rightfully so.
My favourite episode on the set is the brilliant 'Apples and Self Service'; the last of S1; in which Arkwright experiments with a 'self-service' area after sales in the apple department begin to fall.
A classic all the way, this one; easy to see why it's loved by so many. A truly great, and funny, programme. 9/10

    Audio:
Appallingly, this comes equipped with just mono. Stereo would've been alright, but mono?! At least it's a dialogue-driven show. 4/10

    Video:
In standrad 4:3 aspect ratio, with a fair amount of grain (though that's more a source fault). Adequate.. just. 5/10

    Price:
Overpriced, like many a BBC DVD, but not terribly expensive, you should be able to get it for a tenner. 7/10

    Extras:
Good for a BBC release; along with your menus, chapters and subtitles, there's a textual Writer's Profile, and the original Pilot of the series - very different to what it turned into. Alrighty. 5/10

    Packaging:
C'est un typique plastic snapper case. Holds the disc rather well. 7/10

    Overall:
One of Britain's best sitcoms on a typical BBC DVD. 60%

    Family-Friendly Rating:
Guidance, there's a little mild language and innuendo.
