I married Hannah Hodgetts and went to live in the 11th Ward of Salt Lake City. On Dec. 28th, 1856, (I) was called to be a teacher in that ward by Bishop Alexander McRae. And as such (I) sought to faithfully magnify my calling.

(I) participated in the reformation March 3rd, 1857 (and) was rebaptized with my wife and many others. (I believe the Reformation was an act of recommitting to the Mormon faith)
March 16th, 1857, (I) was ordained a Seventy (by) Benjamin Clapp and others in the Seventies Council Hall (in) Salt Lake City. I received and was made a member of the Seventh Quorum of Senties.

In the fall of the same year, (I) participated in the Echo Canyon Campaign and tried to fill my place as a failthful officer. (I believe the Echo Canyon Campaign involved protecting the city from the invading and hostile U.S. Army under the direction of a Col. Johnston. He threatened to destroy the city, but Mormon President Brigham Young was able to stop the destruction by agreeing to step down as governor of the state.)

In 1858 moved as far south as Payson (where I) helped to move many things belonging to the church from Brigham city and Salt Lake City to Provo and back again to Salt lake city where I brought my family back to and stayed over winter.

April 26, 1859, (we) left Salt Lake City for Cache Valley(Logan, Utah).

May 1, (we) arrived at Maughan Fort now Wellsville.

May 2 and 3rd, we built a bridge over the Muddy River which was very high with the spring rains. A large company had gathered. Nearly thirty families crossed the bridge and Muddy bottoms. When we got ont he rising ground, Brother Peter Maughan came and appointed a committee of three: John P. Wright, John Nelson and Israel J. Clark for the purpose of seeing the land surveyed. Each (was) to have their equal portion and attend to all public matters for the company.
