GREAT NEWS!
I recently received several new pictures including some of my Great-Great Grandfather Ralph in the slammer for practicing polygamy/plural marriage. I also received pictures of his youngest wife Mary Ann Rutledge Jolley. Very very cool.

I recently received a picture of my Ralph Smith as a younger man. I also was given a picture of his first/second wife Hannah Hodgetts. Ralph was previously married to Hannah Dodds who dumped him shortly after arriving in Salt Lake City, Utah. So technically Hannah Hodgetts is wife number two. Hannah Number Two died at the young age of 25 leaving behind four children under the age of four. I was also given a picture of one of those children Ralph Hodgetts Smith. Needless to say I was thrilled! I had been praying to find these pictures for years! Apparently prayer helps! Thank Heavens.

I have typed in three more versions of Ralph Smith's history/journal. I wasn't going to type the third but am so glad I did. Once again it's another version of Ralph's life. It sheds some more light on his family's life. I am so glad I took the time to type it in. I would encourage anyone with an interest in the Smith family to read all four versions of Ralph's journal. Each seems to answer questions from the other journals. One journal gives a lot of information on his prosecution and flight from polygamy. You can find it at this link.

I have also FINALLY FINALLY put the entire 66 page Kelling Girdlestone History on my webpage. Now I just need to link all the pages together. The history, as the name implies talks mainly about the Kelling Girdlestone bunch. There's a brief passage about my Wramplingham family. It also talks about the origin of the name. It may have been "Girlofstuna" at one time. It also gives a pedigree of all the children descended from the Kelling bunch a brief biography of each. Very cool. I have been lucky to have received a copy of this history from various cousins, and I will always be grateful for that. Thanks to everyone!

On March 6,2008, I received a letter from my cousin Keith Smith who is descended from my great-great-uncle George Usher Smith. I called him up and we talked for nearly two hours about the family. He's going to send me a bio of his great-grandmother and my great-great-Aunt Matilda Farns Smith. Very very cool! I had written a letter to a newspaper looking for the couple's descendents and I found it, by George! (Pun totally intended)

I have recently come in contact with Barbara Girdlestone Weekes who is descended from Joseph Girdlestone and Elizabeth Jones through their son Robert Girdlestone and his wife Frances Coulsey. Robert was my great-great-great-uncle and brother of my great-great-great-grandfather Thomas Girdlestone. Barbara recently sent me several pictures include a picture of what I believe to be my great-great-uncle Thomas Girdlestone's headstone. Very cool.

I recently finished typing in my great-great-grandfather Ralph Smith's (Emma's second husband) journal as well as another shorter journal he wrote on to my webpage.

I have finished my second novel. This one features Emma's husband Ralph and his Mormon mission to Georgia and Alabama and later back to jolly old England. It goes to print shortly. The first, as you may know, "The Bugle Has Called" told the story of Emma Girdlestone and her trek across the prairie to Utah with the Willie Handcart Company. The last portion of that book also details her second marriage to Ralph. Because of some new information from the two journals, I am considering changing a couple things in the original book "The Bugle Has Called." If anyone out there has any information about Ralph and his mission it would be greatly appreciately.

As for the journal, it took forever to type it in, but it was worth it as it contains a wealth of information on Ralph's five wives: Hannah Dodds, Hannah Hodgetts, Emma Girdlestone, Susan Jolley, Mary Ann Rutledge Jolley (a step sister of Susan's) and the family's 20 children.

Also a desendent of Ralph and his second wife Hannah Hodgetts recently contacted me. He sent a picture of his Grandmother who was the granddaughter of Hannah and Ralph. If anyone out there in cyberspace has any pictures or any information on Hannah - no matter how small - I would greatly appreciate it. Also I am looking for additional information on Mary Ann Rutledge Jolley Smith. Any pictures or information would be greatly appreciated.

Ralph had 20 children between his five wives and so far I only have pictures of his and Emma's children. If anyone has any pictures they wouldn't mind sharing I would greatly appreciate it.

This web page is dedicated to tracing Emma Girdlestone's family!

Here Emma is pictured with her daughter Mary Jane Ridges by her first husband Joseph Ridges This picture was taken in the 1860s. I received this picture from Mary Jane's daughter and my cousin the late Thelma Perry Shumway.
Mary Jane Girdlestone Ridges and her husband Henry Perry also had a large family.

Emma emmigrated to the U.S. in 1856 with her parents Thomas and Mary Betts Girdlestone. Mary Betts was the daughter of Thomas Betts and Frances Mullinger. The couple had the following children:

Jan 1, 1786 Martha Christened at Wramplingham, Norfolk, England.
22 Dec 1793 Thomas Christened at Great Melton, Norfolk, England
5 Mar 1797 Mary Christened at Great Melton, Norfolk, England
25 Aug 1799 Christened at Great Melton, Norfolk, England
18 Jul 1802 James Christened at Great Melton, Norfolk, England

Thomas Betts' father may have also been named Thomas as was his father. More information to come compliments of my cousin Geoff Monument! Thank you so much Geoff who personally called me from Jolly Old England!

The Girdlestones left behind a large family which included Emma's older brother James Girdlestone James was married to Martha Shearing with whom he had four children - including a set of twins.
James was christened 10 Oct 1824 in Marlingford.

The other children include:

John who was christened 20 Feb 1819 at Marlingford. He died as an infant.

John, born 5 Nov 1820 in Marlingford. he died 6 Jan 1886. He was married to Ann Boulder.

Elizabeth was born 1823 in Marlingford. She died in 1850. She was married to Henry Bennett.

Thomas was christened 10 Oct. 1824 in Marlingford. he died 9 March 1864. He was married to Sarah Lee.

James was born next and he was followed by Mary Ann who was born 8 Nov 1829 in Marlingford. She died 15 Oct. 1907. She married William Hewett.

Robert was born 1833 at Barford. He died at the age of four in 1837

Emma was next and was born 31 March 1835 at Barford. She died 31 Dec 1914 at Logan, Utah, in the United States.

Frances was born 7 Aug 1837 in Barford. She married Alfred Oldfield.

Sarah Ann was born 29 Jan 1844 at Great Melton. She died 25 Feb 1844.

It was from Great Melton that Thomas, Mary and Emma emmigrated stateside.

Thomas and Mary died enroute to the West but Emma not only survived but thrived.

About five years following her divorce from Ridges, Emma married her second husband and my great-great-grandfather Ralph Smith.

Here she is pictured in her mid 30s. She is shown as an elderly woman, possibly in her late 70s in this picture. Ralph and Emma's youngest daughter Alice Girdlestone Smith is my great-grandmother.

Emma gave each of her children the middle name of Girdlestone.

The name Girdlestone may have originally started out asGirlofstuna

It later evolved into Girdlestone. There are theories the name was created from the farm work my ancestors did. Many created Girdlecakes on stone thus Girdle-stone. Another theory is the family got their name from the boundary surrounding their property. The name is also a medical term as well as a construction term.

There were two branches of the Girdlestone family in England. One lived in Kelling, Norfolk, England while the other (mine) lived in Wramplingham. While no one has has been able to prove it, I believe that both branches of the family are related to one forebearer named Christopher Girdlestone.

The furthest back I've been able to trace my family is to my
eight grandfather William Girdlestone of Blakeney, Norfolk, England. I do not know my eighth-great grandmother's name but their son Willimus Girdlestone is my seventh great-grandfather. William and his wife also had a daughter named Alice.

Willimus (also possibly known as William) married Ursula Tydd and their son, my sixth great-grandfather was Jon Girdlestone who married my sixth great-grandmother Elizabeth Fuller.

Willimus and Ursula lived at Blakeney, Norfolk, England. According to parish records their surname was spelled "Gurdleston."

I have seen it spelled several different ways and by the time it got to Emma it was spelled "Girdlestone."

According to Blakeney, Norfolk, parish records, Willimus and Ursula had a son named Thomas who was born in 1645, a son named Henry(not sure of birthdate) and a son named Josias born in 1665.

Willimus may have died in 1684 and Ursula died in 1704 at the age of 90! For that time reaching the age of 90 was an incredible accomplishment.

Also listed in the Blakeney records are another William and his wife Margaret. This couple may possibly be my eighth great-grandparents and Willimus' parents. The parish records "Margaret, wife of William Gurdlestone buried 1645." I believe her husband died in 1653.

The records also list a Sarah Gurdleston, daughter of William Gurdleston (and possibly Ursula) who died between 1653 and 1664. Another Margaret Gurdleston (also possibly Ursula and Willimus' daughter) died in 1664.

There is also a mention of a Richard Girdlestone (spelled Girdlestone) who died in 1772 at the age of 60.

A Richard Girdlestone is mentioned in the Kelling Girdlestone family history. He may be the "missing link" connecting the Wramplingham and Kelling families.

I have a record of Ursula and Willimus' son Jon marrying Elizabeth Fullerin Hilborough, Norfolk, England in the mid 1600s. Their son Ishmael (and so far I can only prove they had one child though I'm sure they had a big family like the rest of the Girdlestones) later married Sarah Hunt. Their first pregnancy resulted in twins - William and Elizabeth. Elizabeth died shortly after birth but William lived well into his 60s. He never married.

Ishmael and Sarah later moved to Wramplingham where generations of their family's events are recorded. Their son Joseph is my progenitor. He married Elizabeth Jones and the pair had a large family. Their son Thomas is my great-great-grandfather. He married Mary Betts.

Emma lived to be nearly 80. You can find her obit at this link.
Anyone with any information on the Girdlestones is invited to contact me.

I would also appreciate it if you would sign my guestbook.
Thanks
Lisa
