Avocado Tree Project
The Avocado Tree Project is a traveling Art Installation taking place in numerous sites around the country. Participants are currently being recruited to grow avocado trees out of avocado pits. The Exhibit will start to tour in 2008.
The project officially started Monday October 8th 2007, when a mass email was sent out with an Instruction packet after I set 150 avocado pits in water for them to begin the sprouting process. That Monday October 8th I received several emails with people who sign up to Participate. The power of email was then evident. Everyday for the last two weeks at least one or two people email regarding the project.
I chose to do this project based on an experience I had a month ago listening and watching a jazz band perform. I was trying to think of how the fine arts expressed the living with an actual living thing as the thing being exhibited. This thought came to me because the band performed the music live, you could see and listen to what they performed. I did a small search and there wasn’t much there besides performative art. I can’t forget Natalie Jeremie Jenko’s trees at Mass MOCA. Most artwork in galleries are objects or 2dimensional expressions of life. I like the idea of putting a project together that involves the care and nurture of a living thing as well as exhibiting the living thing. I had part of an avocado for dinner that same night and the idea was born by uniting these two expierences.
Purpose
My goal is to provide a green tree environment in an urban setting. The trees will be exhibited in a series of places; for example in a building lobby as a group or a section of someone’s office. Maybe the trees will be installed in a school or they may travel in a portable green house and be placed next to bus stops or in front of businesses. The exhibition spaces will be specifically chosen to accommodate several project needs:
• To create an environment that can positively enliven or positively influence the mood of a place (enliven the space and how people feel about it)
• To create a place for conversation and discussion between people that don’t usually talk to each other
• To connect the arts with people who don’t usually visit art museums or art galleries
• To involve people in the process of growing a tree from a seed and parting with it to create a positive environment.
The first thing I’m asking is if you could read the contents listed below and send this to people you think would be interested in participating. I am looking for 600 or so avocado tree growers so don’t be shy in sending the information to a few people out of state. We can always figure out how to get the trees here.
Details
• I’m looking for people to participate by growing one or two avocado trees in their home. The goal is to grow 500 trees for this installation.
• If you are interested please email me with your name and the number of trees you are willing to grow.
• The trees will be nurtured by the participants of this project until the trees are about 6-12 inches. I will then pick up the trees for the exhibit installation.
• ALL participants will be informed about the touring exhibit as the sites are identified.
• Please read the information packet I have attached to this email for more information.
Please email me at vpacheco62@hotmail.com if you plan on participating.
