Dantes, a generally well-liked person, is engaged to be married to Mercedes, a kind young woman. He is also about to become captain of a ship, and is very happy with the life he is living. Unfortunately Dantes has collected some enemies, such as Danglars (jealous of him becoming captain), Fernand Mondego (wants to marry Mercedes), and Caderousse (jealous of how well his life is). Although Dantes believes these men to be good friends, they end up betraying him by creating a letter saying Dantes is guilty of treason. The day of his wedding Dantes is arrested. The Deputy Prosecutor, Villefort, is willing to let Dantes go, until he reveals that the man he's holding a letter for is Villefort's father, Noirtier. Frightened news of Noirtir's treasons will become public, Villefort sentences Dantes to life imprisonment. When in prison Dantes befriends Abbe Faria imprisoned for his religous views, and is told where a treasure is buried if he ever escapes. Dantes later escapes and finds the treasure. In order to keep from returning to jail, he becomes Abbe Busoni an Italian Priest. Dantes (Abbe Busoni) learns Danglars and Mondego are rich and living luxurious lives, and along with them Cadorousse played part in his framing. Seeing that Cadorousse is so miserable, he leaves him with a valuable diamond. About ten years later, Dantes (Abbe Busoni) has changed his identity to the Count of Monte Cristo and is considered a very great and admirable man. Through another entangling plot, Dantes (Abbe Busoni, Count of Monte Cristo) finds Danglars, Mondego and Villefort, and hatches a plan for revenge... the rest you should read on your own.
