'90s INDIE-ROCK/UNDERGROUND (USED ITEMS) CONT:

* Mekons/Kathy Acker-Pussy, King of the Pirates LP (Quarterstick LP, 1996)-Nice LP version of this collaboration album from 1996. Absolutely mint condition. Very nice hard cardstock gatefold cover with text and some fairly serious artwork. USED LP $12.50

* Malcolm Mooney and the Tenth Planet-s/t CD (no label credit, 1998)-Surprisingly great '98 CD by Can singer Mooney backed by, I believe, a group of Bay Area musicians, including Bruce Anderson and Marc Weinstein from MX-80. Really good album! Conceptually, the album reminds me of a Red Krayola record, but, frankly, the band backing Mooney does better stuff than the recent Red Krayola lineups and Mooney himself is more interesting and enjoyable than Thompson has been of late. Includes an OUTSTANDING version of "Father Cannot Yell." EX cond. USED CD $8.50

* Mosquito-Oh No, Not another Mosquito, My House Is Full of Them CD (Psycho Acoustic Sounds CD, 1992)-Weird Jad Fair group, a trio with Tim Foljahn and Steve Shelley. Jad pretty much spazzes out making mouth noises (he's the "mosquito," I guess) through the whole thing, while Foljahn and Shelley jam out on some basic grooves. Interestingly relentless. USED CD, EX. COND. $4.50

* Stuart Moxham-Signal Path CD (Feel Good All Over CD, 1992)-'92 CD by ex-Young Marble Giants guy. EX cond. USED CD $5.00

* MX-80-I've Seen Enough CD (Atavistic CD, 1996?)-'90s MX-80 Sound full-length CD on Atavistic. Includes "15 Laffs," previously issued as a single on Forced Exposure. 14 tracks. Stim, Anderson, Sopheia, Weinstein lineup. USED CD $5.00

* Old-Formula CD (Earache CD, 1995)-Interesting album by this obscure American metal band, forging a real progressive metal/new wave crossover (in 1995, no less!)! USED CD, EX. COND. $3.00

* Prolapse-Ghosts of Dead Aeroplanes CD (Jet Set CD, 1999)-Fourth (and last?) album by this outstanding British group who never attracted a whole lot of attention here. Quite like Stereolab (songs are as well-written, well-arranged, and tight), but far less bright and happy and much more post-punk-like. Includes the ferocious, early Fall-like track "Government of Spain." USED CD $7.50

* Zoogz Rift and Marc Mylar-Nutritionally Sound CD (Trigon CD, 1990)-An obscure, later Zoogz album on Trigon, and, in fact, Zoogz' last studio album. This guy has definitely NOT had his day in the last decade-plus amongst those with a real strong interest in underground music. He's actually a genius. In the later days, Zoogz got more into keyboard programming and didn't record with a full band. Most of these tracks are built up with keyboards and drum machines. Reminds me somewhat of Mark Mothersbaugh's more recent music, but from a guy with a post-punk vision of Zappa-like complexity and aesthetic proportions (i.e. way more complex and funny and MUSICALLY GOOD). Zoogz is genuinely super-funny and there's not a lot of gross or embarrassing stuff on this (as was seemingly perhaps more so the case with his earlier records). His version of Freddie and the Dreamers' "I'm Telling You Now" on this is one of the funniest musical things I remember hearing in a while, but this also features some fairly massive compositions. EX condition. USED CD $6.50

* Wayne Rogers-Infraction CD (Twisted Village CD, 1996)-Excellent solo CD by this east coast heavy psych guitarist. Unlike many purveyors of psych guitar from the past two decades, Rogers has excellent chops. He also has excellent compositional skills. USED CD, EX. COND. $6.50

* Sad and Lonelys-s/t LP (Super Electro LP, date? recorded 1991)-Mint copy of LP by Seattle garage trio from the early '90s, featuring Steve Turner from Mudhoney. Pink marble vinyl. Still has original shrinkwrap on (though it was opened on the side so that the record could be removed). USED LP $5.00

* Smegma-Ism CD (Tim/Kerr CD, 1993)-15 track Smegma album from 1993. Features guest appearances by Ace Farren Ford, the Reverend Toadeater, etc. USED CD, EX. COND. $6.50

* Thee Speaking Canaries-Songs for the Terrestrially Challenged CD (Scat CD, 1995)-EX condition copy of this Speaking Canaries CD from '95. USED CD $5.50

* Spoiler-Crashpad LP (PCP Entertainment LP, 1994)-Obscure LP from '94 by NYC group featuring Mark C., formerly of Live Skull, and Lin Culbertson (later of the free improv group White Out). Sounds a lot like Live Skull, but with chord progressions! Good guitar. Vinyl is NM; cover is EX-. USED LP $5.50

* Nikki Sudden-Red Brocade CD (Chatterbox CD, 1999)-'99 release by Nikki on American label. USED CD, EX. COND. $4.50

* Sun Dial-Reflecter LP (U.K.: UFO LP, 1992)-Still new, shrinkwrapped copy of original pressing of this '92 album by contemporary British psych group Sun Dial. (Does not appear to be one with the bonus seven inch.) Mint cond. $12.00

* Sun Dial-Fazer 12" EP (U.K.: UFO 12" EP, 1992)-Still new, shrinkwrapped copy of this four song 12" EP from '92 by contemporary British psych group Sun Dial. Songs are "I Don't Mind," "Let It Go," "Out of Place," and "Easy Fazer." Mint cond. $7.00

* Supercharger-s/t CD (Estrus CD, 1992/1997)-Used CD copy of the first Supercharger album. Along with the Gories, the Mummies, and the Night Kings, one of the great garage punk bands of the early '90s. Single sheet CD insert has just a little discoloration and waviness from some water exposure; still looks pretty decent though. CD's in perfect shape. USED CD $6.50

* Tell-Tale Hearts-"Circus Mind" b/w "Flying" 45 (Nevermore 45, 1993)-Recordings from 1989 by the late-period group (with different lineup than those on the Voxx records), issued posthumously. MINT condition. A-side is a Pretty Things song; b-side is a Freakbeat-style original. $3.00

* Thinking Fellers Union Local 282-Admonishing the Bishops 10" EP (Matador 10" EP, 1993)-Four song ten-inch on Matador from '93. Cover and record both close to new condition: EX. USED 10" EP $5.00

* Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments-Bait and Switch CD (Onion/American CD, 1995)-The amazing artifact that is the Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments' major label album. 12 tracks--seems like a good sampling of their material. Excellent cond. USED CD $5.50

* Three Day Stubble-The Figshta Diaries: A Nerd Rock Opera CD (Nerd Rock Music CD, 1999)-Nice cond. USED CD, EX. COND. $5.00

* Trotsky Icepick-Carpetbomb the Riff CD (SST CD, 1992)-'92 CD on SST by Trotsky Icepick, L.A. band that included John Talley-Jones and Kjehl Johansen of the Urinals/100 Flowers and Vitus Matare of the Last. USED CD, EX. COND. $3.50

* Trumans Water-Spasm Smash XXXOXOX Ox and Ass CD (Homestead CD, 1993)-CD copy of the second Trumans Water album. This was also released as a double LP. CD and booklet both EX. USED CD $5.00

* V.3-Photograph Burns CD (Onion/American CD, 1996)-The equally amazing artifact that is the V.3 major label album. Ohioan Jim Shepard's group. This one, for whatever reason, doesn't turn up as often as the Slave Apartments CD or the Bloodloss CD on Reprise. USED CD, EX. COND. $6.00

* Alan Vega-New Raceion CD (American, 1993)-Still new, shrinkwrapped copy of '93 major label Vega CD. NEW CD $5.00

* Wolverton Brothers-Glad CD (Atavistic CD, 1995)-1995 CD by this underrated guitar band from Cincinnati. This was their fourth album. EX condition. USED CD $6.50

CONTEMPORARY UNDERGROUND (USED ITEMS):

* 25 Suaves-Self-titled (Bulb CD)-One-off new, still shrinkwrapped copy of 25 Suaves' first album on CD, available at 'the Nice Price.' NEW CD $6.00

* Crawlspace-Blimp Music Volume 1 CD (Outsidetheanthillthree CD, 2000)-2000 CD by Crawlspace featuring two lengthy (over thirty minutes) pieces featuring just two guitars. USED CD, EX. COND. $5.50

* Pip Proud-Oncer CD (Emperor Jones CD, 2000)-The late-'60s Australian visionary singer and songwriter made a comeback after a revival of interest in his music in the late '90s. There was a CD before this on Emperor Jones that consisted of both old tracks from the '60s and some new recordings, and then this, a full-length album released (I believe) in 2000. A very interesting album, very much in his old style. This copy does not have the CD insert, but it was fairly minimal anyway. USED CD $5.50

* Tarantula Hawk-s/t CD (Life Is Pain CD, 2000)-First CD (they have two out) by this contemporary, heavy, sort of gothic/metal, math rock quartet from San Diego (did I get the description right?). One 36+ minute track. Enhanced CD with a Quicktime video. USED CD $5.50

METAL (USED ITEMS):

* Ozzy Osbourne-Blizzard of Ozz LP (Jet LP, 1981)-Like new original vinyl copy. Record and cover both EX: very nice. This is the LP with "Crazy Train," "Suicide Solution," and "Mr. Crowley." USED LP $6.00

JAZZ (USED ITEMS):

* Air (Henry Threadgill group)-Live Air LP (Italy: Black Saint, 1980)-Outstanding '70s free jazz group led by Henry Threadgill. A trio with Steve McCall on drums and Fred Hopkins on bass. Very skronky and intense, actually. Beautiful mint copy! USED LP $8.00

* Marion Brown-Duets 2xLP (Arista Freedom 2xLP, 1975)-Double LP from '75 of duets by the free jazz alto saxophonist. First LP is four duets with trumpeter Leo Smith. Second LP is one long duet (divided up into two sides) with Elliot Schwartz (piano and ARP synthesizer). Pretty much like new copy. Records are NM, cover is EX. USED 2xLP $16.50

* Charles Gayle-Unto I Am CD (Canada: Victo CD, 1994)-'94 Canadian CD of Gayle by himself, performing on sax, bass clarinet, piano, drums, and singing. NEW, STILL SHRINKWRAPPED CD $6.50

* Cecil Taylor-Silent Tongues: Live at Montreaux '74 LP (Arista Freedom LP, 1975)-Live LP of Cecil solo from '75. Vinyl is EX-, cover is VG. Nice copy. USED LP $9.00

AVANT-GARDE CLASSICAL:

* Erik Satie LP (Candide LP, 1970)-U.S. LP of recordings of Satie pieces by the Orchestra of Radio Luxembourg from 1970. This one's really cool because it's centered around recordings of two of his great later scores: the great fifteen minute "music that functions like a prop onstage" score for Parade, a ballet collaboration with Cocteau and Picasso, and his great "loop music" score ("Entr'acte cinematographique") for a film that was screened during a performance of the play Relache by the Paris Dada artist Francis Picabia. Cover (with Picasso's Arlequin) is VG/VG+. Vinyl is VG+ (one very small scratch on the piece "La belle excentrique," which does briefly cause a few skips for a few seconds). USED LP $7.50

FOLK (USED ITEMS):

* John Fahey-The New Possibility: John Fahey's Guitar Soli Christmas Album LP (Takoma LP, date?)-Quite nice original LP version of Fahey's first Christmas music album (also released on Varrick as Christmas Guitar Volume One--I don't know what the deal was). A great record! Does great versions of lots of traditional Christmas songs. Record and sleeve both EX-. USED LP $5.00

EARLY ROCK AND ROLL (USED ITEMS):

* Buddy Holly and the Crickets-20 Golden Greats LP (MCA LP, 1978)-Great 20 track greatest hits LP that came out in the late '70s. Has all of the hits and more. Very nice copy and nice opportunity to have a nice collection of Holly tunes that you can hear on vinyl. Vinyl is NM! Cover is EX. USED LP $5.50

* Ricky Nelson-s/t 2xLP (United Artists 2xLP, 1971)-Nice copy of this 1971 double LP greatest hits collection of Ricky Nelson's Imperial Records sides. 26 tracks, including all of the hits and more. Very nice package with double LP gatefold cover and six page full-size inlaid booklet (liner notes by Ed Ward). Cover is EX-. Records are near mint! (Note: Record one of the set has a VERY SLIGHT waviness at outer edge which caused no tonal warpage and only one single groove skip upon playback.) USED 2xLP $6.50

COUNTRY AND WESTERN (USED ITEMS):

* Johnny Paycheck-Johnny Paycheck Again LP (Certron LP, 1970)-Obscure 1970 LP on small Certron label from Nashville. Song titles are "Forever Ended Yesterday," "I Feel like Crying," "Julie," "My Sweet Love Ain't Around," "I've Got Wine on My Mind," "Keeping up with the Joneses," "Sunny Side of the Mountain," "Living the Life of a Dog," "Talk about Me," "Honky Tonks and Slow Sad Music," and "It's for Sure I Can't Go On." Cover is NM. Vinyl is VG+ (good sound, some light marks--has one notable scratch on side two that was audible but caused no skips upon playback). USED LP $5.00

WORLD MUSIC:

* King Sunny Ade and His African Beats-Synchro System LP (Canada: Island LP, 1983)-Classic Ade album from '83, demonstrating his "synchro system" style of composing/arranging. James Brown influenced one chord grooves. 18 piece band with five guitars and one bass guitar (cool cover identifies all 18 members and you can note how all the guitarists play Strat copies--cool!). Cover has a little bit of water damage (not too bad: just a little tearing and some warpage), but record is NM! USED LP $6.50

* Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey and His Inter-Reformers Band-Solution LP (U.K.: Stern's African LP, 1984)-Cool mid-'80s British small label LP by the Chief Commander of juju music from Nigeria (King Sunny Ade is the King). The Inter-Reformers Band, at this point, included four guitars (solo, rhythm, tenor, and "Hawaiian"--i.e. slide), two bass guitars (1st and 2nd), six percussionists, and five chorus singers. There are four songs on side one and six on side two, and they're performed as medleys on both sides. Vinyl is VG+; cover is VG. USED LP $6.00
