Marty Martinez *TENOR*
I am a native of the lovely island of Puerto Rico. And the cute accent brings with it special challenges in matching those vowels that the judges like so much. I have always been interested in music and sang in a gospel rock band by the name of "Daughter's of Zion" in the early 1980's. After moving to New York and settling in the Thousand Islands area in 1986, I was really missing singing with the band. In 1987 a friend, Carol Pease, invited me to a Northern Blend Chorus rehearsal and I have been hooked into 4-part harmony ever since.
I started in the chorus singing Lead and became good friends with another Lead, Dorene Dickerson. Dorene and I were always trying to get a quartet going and I decided to give Tenor a try.
I rejoined Northern Blend in 1998 after an absence of 3 years for personal reasons, and Dorene asked me to join a quartet which we later named "Vocal Point".
"Vocal Point" has been through many changes since our first competition in 1999. It's been an interesting journey so far. We have grown in experience and in knowledge and in love for one another. The ladies in Vocal Point are great gals to hang out with. We really have a lot of fun together.
The journey has been very challenging for me, because being a single mother and not having family in this area makes it hard going away to competition. Thank God for my friends and co-workers, who have stepped into the role of my family.
I reside in the Cape Vincent, NY area with my two children, Patrick and Rachel, who are the light of my life, a dog, and a cat. Being a mom, working full-time as a guidance counselor and singing barbershop take most of my time. But when I can fit it into my schedule, I like reading, fishing, boating, camping, sports, sewing, needlepoint, and working on this website.
