November is VFW’s “ Veterans in the Classroom” Month

The need to support citizenship education in our schools is an important goal for the VFW. In fact, there are many programs you can plan and present in schools. For example your Post/Department can be helpful in assisting youngsters in grades K-2 learn the Pledge of Allegiance. For grades 3-5 you can begin teaching them about proper flag etiquette and the basic rules of the Federal Flag Code. For the older kids in grades 6-12 VFW members can provide their unique experiences as combat veterans with their “living histories.” Remember, the week of November 7 – 13 is “National Veterans Awareness” week in the schools. A “How To” guide was recently created to assist you in planning your activities. Contact you Department Headquarters for a copy or you can go to http://www.vfwdepartmentresources.org/default.asp?category_id=324 click on the “Veterans in The Classroom” guide and download.

Make sure they understand the deadlines stated under “Important Dates” of this e-newsletter. Visit Youth Development www.vfw.org for more info.

RECOGNITION

Watch your local media for young people or emergency responders who have saved a life. Presenting a citation to these individuals is easy and benefits your Post in a big way. Send us a letter from your Post Commander requesting a citation with a copy of the news article verifying the lifesaving act. We will send you an attractive citation for presentation. All young lifesavers are entered for National Youth Hero and emergency responders are considered for national awards as well.
