Welcome to Vee Jay Writes

Hi World. I am Vanessa Johnson, an Aspiring New Writer of a Non-fiction book, "WHEN DEATH COMES A KNOCKIN'."

To tell you a little bit about myself, I am the 911 Supervisor for the Sheriff’s Department in a little town just west of New Orleans (Louisiana, of course). I have worked for the Department in the Communications Division for the past twenty-five years.

I have been married to my friend and life partner, Welton, for twenty-four years and the proud mother of three children, Haven, twenty-three years old, Alexis, three years old and Jalen, now deceased 7 years.)

I have always had a love for the written word. Way back in high school, I remembered my journalism class as being my most enjoyable class (yes, above math).

While working the night shift during my early years at the Sheriff’s Department I read many novels on those long boring nights when nothing was happening that needed police/fire/ems attention. Romance, mystery and non-fiction books are among my favorite genres.

Although my love of the written word has vastly expanded through the years, I didn't start writing until the close, untimely deaths of my mother, Arcadia "Grace" Woods Alexander, on August 28, 1994 and son, Jalen Michael Johnson, on September 30, 1994. It was at the suggestion of my husband that I put my feelings on paper in hopes that it might help me through the healing process. I did, and I started out writing about the medical problems we encountered during my pregnancy with my son, Jalen and the impact his life, although short, had on the lives of everyone he touched in a book titled, "Never Say Goodbye."

Even though that book (Never Say Goodbye!)is not yet complete, I have completed several fiction short stories, namely, Movin’ On Up, For The Love of Trace, Errand Boy, Uncommon Bond, and Chattin' With My Lord, and have entered some of them in various writing competitions (Writer’s Digest, Fiction Line, Serpentine, Glimmertrain, The Writer's Lounge), just to name a few, and poems (Good Old Days Gone By, When The Trumphet Sounds, Discovery, A Tribute to A Friend, written as a tribute honor the men & women who help protect and serve us daily, Police, Fire & EMS Services, just to name a few.

Some of my works, essays, poems and news are also listed on my author site at Author's Den.com.

In addition to reading and writing, I enjoy traveling, baking, spending time with my family and meeting new people. I am also learning how to make a quilt in my spare time (which isn't much these days, especially with my daughter Alexis, who is now three years old. I anxiously await my retirement from the Sheriff’s Office in a few years so that I can devote more time pursuing my writing career.

My book, "When Death Comes A Knockin'," offers guidance to anyone who has to deal with the loss of a love one. It details the steps of the grief process (yes, the feelings and emotions you experience is part of a process) and offers support, encouragement and suggestions on how you can conquere the grief process and learn to live again. Click the address at the bottom of this page to read the Introduction to, "When Death Comes A Knockin,."

In addition to my Mother and son mentioned above, this site is also dedicated to the memory of some of my other departed love ones:

My sisters, Theresa and Glenda Alexander,
My Grandmothers, Menolia Lagrange & Philomene Alexander
My Grandfathers, Harold Woods, Ferdinand Alexander, Sr, & Step Grandfather, Steve LaGrange
My Neice, Dorianne Monique Boudoin
My Friend, James Singleton
And to all the other countless relatives and Friends who have gone on to their resting place. I love you and miss you all dearly and I thank God for all of the joy each of you brought into my life.
