I strongly recommend that you read the books listed below. They aren't so much about techniques and tricks on how to defend yourself, but more so concepts and the science behind the application of techniques. Understanding concepts and scientific principles will best prepare you to survive a violent confrontation. If you're fortunate enough to live in a great city like New York, with all of its well-stocked libraries, put that library card to use by borrowing these books, or purchase a copy for your personal reference library.
