Tommy - My Hero
On New Years Eve 2001, a tragedy struck our family, Our brother in law Tommy and his daughter Kim died in a house fire. Tommy had been trying to rescue Kim after making sure his son had got out safely, our hearts were broke in two that morning when we were woken with the terrible news, Life would never be the same again.
I had been suffering ill health for about 12 months, with the hospital suspecting crohns disease. I was beginning to feel that life was too much, with trying to cope with my illness, as well as being torn apart with grief, I also wanted to be there for my sister and her family, who were suffering far more than anyone of us could ever know.
One night we went up to bed as usual, and I really felt unwell, I told Karen that I didn't think I could take any more and she comforted me untill I fell asleep. At about 3.00 a.m Karen woke with an eerie feeling, she wasn't scared, but she knew something wasn't right, she looked toward me to make sure I was OK and there, above my head she could see an image of Tommy's face. He remained there for a couple of seconds then he faded away. It was at this point that I jolted awake, my heart was racing, but I couldn't bring myself to tell Karen what had happened to me untill the next day...
I didn't recall falling asleep, only the fact that I met up with Tommy. He was telling me it wasn't time for me to leave my family yet, that people still needed me and I had to go back, I remember that I refused to go, I remember laughing with Tommy about the old times, but I couldn't place where we were. He was adamant that I had to go back and the next thing I remember was waking up with a jump, and seeing the look on Karen's face as she told me who she had just seen.
That was proof enough for me, I had tried to cross to the other side, but had been sent back by Tommy, and Karen had seen him as he escorted me safely back home.
