ghost story 2

MY NANNA

Hi, my name is Karen and you might already have read my first story - MY GRANDAD - on ghost story 1. The next encounter I remember was when I was eight years old.

My Nanna, my mum's mum, was very ill with cancer. She lived in a house back to back with ours, all we had to do to see her was run across the entry. I loved her to bits and she spoilt me the best she could, but most of all I knew that she loved me as much as I loved her. She always seemed to be there and to see her become so ill so quickly is a memory that will stay with me forever, as young as I was, I knew what was happening, and I knew we were going to lose her.
She was finally admitted to hospital, after months of being cared for at home by my mum and friends. I remember going to see her a couple of times but it was something my mum wasn't happy for me to see. My last memory is of her lying in her hospital bed, a shadow of the woman she had been.
It came as no surprise when the end did come. My mum's brother called round, and when I saw my mum crying I knew straight away - there was no need to tell me - my beloved nanna had died. All I wanted was to see her, but I knew it was impossible. I missed her terribly.
She was laid out in her front room, in the run up to the funeral, where people could pay their last respects. I so wanted to go and see her for what would be the last time, I didn't think it would be scary, she was my nanna and I knew she wouldn't hurt me. My mum thought otherwise, and wouldn't let me go. This really upset me, I wanted to say goodbye.
The day of the funeral came and still I wasn't allowed to go. When I went to bed that night, I was very upset and all I could think about was nanna.
I drifted off to sleep, when I woke up, there, in a coffin at the side of my bed lay my nanna. She looked absolutely beautiful, in an ivory gown, her lovely hair framing her face. I shouted for my mum, even though I had wanted to see her, to have her at the side of my bed like that was a bit scary.
When my mum heard what I had seen she went as white as a sheet, I had seen my nanna exactly the way she had been in her coffin, I had described her right down to the last detail. She wasn't buried in her own clothes as they didn't fit her anymore, due to the drastic weight loss. She was buried in a gown the funeral directors had provided. The thing is it didn't really scare me, once the initial shock had worn off, I knew I had got my wish, to see my nanna one last time and say goodbye.
