Toms River high school varsity boys lacrosse history.Staff report
History was made yesterday on the lacrosse field at Toms River High School North.

The first Toms River high school varsity boys lacrosse game was played, and the hometown Mariners couldn't have asked for a better beginning to the script as they defeated Lawrence, 7-3, in a non-divisional game.

North head coach Brett Smith, who coached the Manchester girls team the last two seasons, said he was confident heading into the game.

"I really expected a hard effort from our team and that's what we got," he said. "I knew our kids were ready to play. We didn't know anything about the other team. We just wanted to play our game and do our job."

Freshman attacker Jay W. Petrucci goes down in the history books at North as the first player to score a varsity goal off a feed from sophomore midfielder Alex Cohen. Smith said the goal came with North up a man as Cohen fed Petrucci, who was in front of the cage and beat Lawrence's goalkeeper.

North held a 3-2 halftime lead and outscored Lawrence, 4-1, in the second half.

Petrucci finished with three goals while freshman midfielder Nick Ruiz scored twice and Cohen and Luke Morgan each added a goal. Petrucci, sophomore Vin Reinecke and freshman Dan Labbatte all added assists.

Smith said freshman goalkeeper Alex Lindstrom played very well for the Mariners as he made 10 saves.

"The kids did very well today," Smith said. "They controlled the ball very well and that was a big key. The defense played well, too. They didn't let too much in from the middle and kept the shots from the outside. The entire team hustled and played smart today."
