The Target Boycott that Wasn't

Oh, those christian fundies. They love to make threats against businesses that don't get on their knees and kiss wrinkled christian ass. The latedst target of their microcephalic ire is the Target store chain. It seems that

1) Target decided to drop the idea of having a "Merry Christmas" sale (which isn't true, but then christians love to get frothed up over things that aren't real, such as the "savior" they worship that never existed).

2) Target decided to ban Salvation Army bell bangers from their stores.

The absurdities of the boycott just keep piling up. According to a November 15 article in The City Paper blog, called “I Am So Boycotting You!"

Target: On November 14, religious groups urge people to shop at a retailer that's friendlier to the Salvation Army after the company creates an online partnership with the Salvation Army but still refuses to allow bell ringers in front of its stores.

Think about it a bit. Target is helping out the Salvation Army online.

So, basically, the fundies have no reason for their boycott.
In a way this makes sense: lack of reason is what makes the fundies who they are.

So essentially the fundies got their panties ion a bundle because of one thing that didn't happen at all, and secondly, because Target decided to have the courage to eliminate a holiday nuisance from their stores.

The fundies want christians to stay away from Target stores on Thanksgiving weekend, which is the biggest sales day of the year.

Oh my. The fundies were predicting dire straits for Target, given their huge numbers. Personally, the lack of bell bangers is a good reason to patronize Target, but I digress.

Here's a news item from 11/25. It looks like the fundy boycott of Target was just so much hot air. One of their own, the reality challenged Pat Robertson, tried to run for president, and failed mightily. And now they can't even make a dent in sales with one of their boycotts. Why was anyone ever afraid of these powerless creeps?

NEW YORK (AP) -- The pre-dawn sales frenzy is over -- and now
the tally begins. Steep discounts and expanded hours drew hordes to
the nation's malls in what merchants hope are signs consumer
spending will be lively for the holidays. More people jammed the
stores early, according to early reports, and more than a few testy
shoppers scuffled in a rush to grab bargains, from notebook
computers to cashmere sweaters. Several major retailers, including
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Sears, Roebuck and Co. and Macy's, as well as
mall operator Taubman Centers Inc., estimated they drew bigger
crowds on the official start of the holiday season than a year ago.
Lena Michaud, spokeswoman at Target Corp., which had a strong
holiday season a year ago, said traffic was at least as heavy.

Oh my. I wonder how the fundies are goping to spin this rather inconvenient fact? My guess is that they will move the goalposts, declaring the boycott that wasn't a success because it brought the non-issues invcolved to national attention. Or maybe they'll see any fluctuation in Target's sales, even if they're weeks after the "boycott," as proof of their success. Stay tuned.

This is not a new story. The "boycott" is a year old. According to a January 5, 2005 Worldner Daily (a fundy web journal):

Buoyed by news that Target Corp. failed to meet holiday sales projections, the National Clergy Council is urging church members to continue to boycott the retail chain because it barred Salvation Army bell ringers during the Christmas season.

Notice what this doesn’t say:

1) It doesn’t say that the boycott was effective (it obviously wasn't, since Target has not changed its policies).

2) It doesn’t say that Target’s sales were down (they weren’t), just that they failed to meet expectations last year. This year, sales are the same as last year-- again no effect.

3) The boycott will continue. Really, the article is an admission of defeat. It's like when a psychic makesa a prediction and that prediction fails utterly: the psychic trote out something like "Events were set in motion that will have far ranging consequences." The boycott is ovcer a year old fellas, Target has not backed down, and people haven't changed their shopping habits.

I find it encouraging to see that Target hasn't backed down. Usually companies grovel at the feet of the fundies.

Finally, what's the real reasaon for the boycott? If the fundies are behind it, you know the reason: money. Don Wildmon's American Family Association (AFA) is one of the main forces behind the boycott. Wildmon is responsible for a lot of boycotts against businesses. According to the "Fight Back Against the Disney Bocott" website,

"...they make greater than 400% profit off of each boycott-related mailing they do. In my mind, that's making money off of judging others..."

Sigh. It's always about the money. I wonder how these champions of morality justify such blatant lying to raise money?
