December 2008 Newsletter

COUNCIL OFFICE:
The council office is open from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM every Tuesday. If this changes for any reason notice will be posted in advance.

The office telephone/fax number is 1-709-443-2599

MUNICIPAL IMPROVEMENTS:

The promised road work has been completed. Since completion council has met with Minister, Jackman and applied for funding to resurface the council side roads.

Sewage Issues
Council has been issued a new “Permit to Operate” a wastewater collection system by the “Department of Environment”, Water Resources Division.

Residents are advised that all new connections, repairs and modifications to a sewer line or water line within the municipal boundary require a permit before work begins and must be inspected and approved by council before being buried.

This is a provincial law and any incident that is not in compliance with the terms of the “Permit” must be reported to the Department. The requirement will be strictly enforced so please cooperate with council on this matter.

Please don’t flush anything that can tangle in the pump impeller. (wash rags, tampons, disposable towels, mop strands, etc)

Water Usage
Council would like to thank all residents for conserving water this past summer. It was the first summer that we didn't experience any water outage due to excessive usage. In addition, no pumps were burned out as a result.

Thank you.

PLEASE continue to conserve WATER! Our supply is limited and repairs are costly.

Tax Deadline
The deadline for payment of 2008 taxes has been set by Municipal Affairs at June 30. At a December 02, 2008 meeting council passed a motion requiring all accounts to be paid by December 23, 2008. This gave taxpayers almost 6 months grace. Anyone not paid in full by December 23, 2008 will have their water shutoff. A $50 reconnect fee will apply and all fees and the reconnect fee must be paid in advance by cash or certified cheque before reconnection will occur.

Rates are the same as 2007. Water and Sewer $240 per year. Property tax is 9 Mils.

Fire Protection
Colin Farewell has agreed to lead a volunteer fire department and has recruited a core group. He will be looking for volunteers in the near future.

Fire protection benefits everyone and a department is required for insurance coverage. Don’t leave it to someone else, do your part.

If anybody has a few minutes to spare we could use some help keeping the fire hall door shovelled this winter. A trunk and equipment is of little use if the door is blocked with snow.
