TOWN OF RED HARBOUR
Red Harbour, Placentia Bay is a small fishing community located just 20 kilometers east of Marystown on the Burin Peninsula in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The present community of Red Harbour was created by former residents of Port Elizabeth, who moved their homes on barges during the "resettlement program" of the 1960's and 1970's. Red Harbour is the only known community to have been created as a result of resettlement.
This website was established as a method of keeping residents of Red Harbour updated on current tax rates, current issues and to let visitors know a little about our community. Phone/Fax: 709-443-2599
Approximately 40 families relocated to Red Harbour in 1969/70. It is close enough to the traditional fishing grounds to permit the fishermen to continue fishing for a living.
Red Harbour was incorporated in 1969 and is recognized as a municipality. The population was 214 at the time of the 2006 national census. It presently (December 2009) stands at just over 170 due to out migration caused by a shortage of jobs locally, a downturn in the fishery, movement of young people to urban centers, and the enticement of high paying jobs in Alberta.
Fishing remains an important employer in Red Harbour with 14 active fishing enterprises. Many residents work in the Marystown/Burin area and commute daily, while others have opted to work in oil fields of Alberta and commute monthly.
