Welcome to TONYs homepage! I will direct this page to people who are interested in Scuba diving and especially in the west coast of Thailand.
If you take a look in the gallery you can see pictures that I or some of my dive buddies have been taken – and they are of course from the west coast.
I’ve done around 50 dives in this area and that includes two liveaboardtrips to Similian Island.
I guess that I can say that I do all my diving, at least this far in Thailand. I have no interests what so ever to do diving in my home country Sweden, it’s to cold and the visibility is around nothing…
My certification history starts with Open Water, completed at Phi Phi Scuba diving center 31 october 2002. Instructor was Linus Franzon who is an excellent diver and a very good teacher.
Advanced Open Water was completed at the same place two years later and that time the instructor was Johan Bratt, also an excellent diver and good educations skill.
Both times was my friend Helge Jonsen my dive buddy.
I have two sons, Alex 18 years and Johan 16 years – they are Open Water divers.
I’ve done a lot of dives around Phi Phi Island and the Bida islands. Usually good dives and very easy if you are a beginner. Could be a bit crowded if you travel in high seasons.
I was there in April this year and there where 4 dive shops opened – only 3 months after the tsunami. Amazing how quick they are in getting the business operating again. Anyway, we stayed for one night and had 2 good dives at Bida Nok and Palong bay.
There are some popular spots between Phuket and Phi Phi including Racha Yai and Racha Noi, Shark point, Flower Island and Anemone Reef and of course the King Cruiser wreck.
Ok dives but for me it feels that one or two times are enough at these places.
I usually travel two times every year to Thailand, once in the spring time then the lowseasons
start and also in october just before the highseason start. Its nice to leave Sweden at that time because the weather starts to be mean.. The spring vacation is just for diving, but the October vacation is a family trip so it doesn’t include that much diving. This year in October and November we where there for 3 weeks and we only did 2 dives, these 2 dives was at Koh Haa 1 and Koh Haa 2/4 – small islands about 1 hour by boat from Koh Lanta. One of the reasons that we only did 2 dives was that the weather was quite bad so the sight was not to good.
My favorite this far is the Similan Island, I’ve been there before and after the tsunami and
I seen that some places have been affected – but not as much as I thought.
Gorilla Bay, North Point, East of Eden, Barracuda Point, Stonehenge, Anita’s Reef, Elephant Head Rock, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Torina Pinnacle, Boulder City, Boomise and of course Richelieu Rock.
They are all more or less good dives, for example at Koh Bon the chances of seeing Manta ray is VERY good. At Elephant Head Rock I had one of my best dives the first time I was there, but the second time one year later it was an ordinary dive – It all depends on the visibility and the strengths of the currents. Richelieu Rock is one of my favorites but could be crowded – I guess it’s not only me that has it as a favorite.
A warning is at place due very strong current is quite common and not always noticed before you jump in the water, so its vise if you have some experience of that before..
Also the variation in quality and safety can vary quite a bit when it comes to Thai liveaboards,
do some research before you order your trip and don’t look only at the prices.
My experience is that it is better to buy the trip in a diveshop in for example Patong.
Then you can check the equipment before you buy the trip if you don’t have your own stuff.
I prefer to have my own mask and wetsuit, but that is certainly up to everyone to decide for themselves. I bought my wetsuit in Patong for 1600 bath, not a heavy burden.
If you have any questions – just send and email and I will answer asap.
Brgds Tony R – I’ve only seen one whaleshark, from the boat!
