Founded in June 2002.... By who, when and how?
James Pokorny of Fort Wayne was probably the first person from the HDB club that had a Harley Davidson bike.. Steve Taylor, also of Fort Wayne, was probably the secnd person but he had a Yahama orginally. Later he traded it for a harley...Then Henry Coleman who moved from Tennessee to Indiana was the third person with a harley. Henry had attracted many friends in Indianapolis who dreamed alot about owning their own harleys. Then Jay Krieger bought his harley in 2001 which led to a "chain reactions"...The timing for alot of people appear to be HOT as more and more people start to buy Harleys as well as other bike brands.
In 2001 Jenry, James, Steve and Jay met occassionally in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. The four bikers often discussed their dream of forming a deaf biker club in Indiana. We coined the Hoosier Deaf Bikers name. Then in Indianapolis Henry and Jay continued to meet often and discussed about bringing HDB to reality..
Finally in 2002 they formally announced HDB's existance.. Jay started a simple and temporary website and started to collect other bikers names. There were about 10 - 15 names at the start..
Then in 2003 Henry and Jay worked together to start fundraising by selling raffles. Henry managed to collect fanastic long list of items to give away as prizes from raffles. The main prize was hydrualic bike lifter. Henry, Dave Tester's dad, Paul and Jay sold lot of tickets at DBA in Milwaukee's HD 100th 'anniversary--HDB started to spin off strongly by getting recognization from bikers across the country --
In late 2003 Henry and Jay started to discuss logo design for club. Jay came up with a design but it was greatly imprvoised with help from ISD students, Drew Hawkins and Ruan Du Plessis-- We had our 1st gathering at PTCO Day in May 2003. We showed our ISD community how we played our bike games. Steve Taylor won slow race.
In May 2004 using fund raised, Henry ordered our first eblem patches and T shirts.. We made a killing on Tshirts sales during PTCO day/Deaf Nation..Tshirts was sold out instantly..
Between May 2004 and May 2005, the club grow so fast.. many more bike rides across Indiana and hdb gatherings at different places by hdb bikers and their babes were held ....for example some went on route 66, some went to Brown County for Bean Blossom festival, some went to Frenchlick , up north and to many various motorcycle swap meet and bike shows across Indiana... Even in winter we had our HDB gathering to follow up with bike ride ideas and fundraising ideas, etc..
In May 2005 HDB started to sell our 2nd round of T shirts, a long sleeved type. HDB also hosted our first Poker run and Events during PTCO day--We rode thru Westfield, Noblesville, Geist and Indianapolis. Richard Taylor won power draw with flush. We offered 4 bike games..Bruce Peters won slow race. Jeff Hicks and his son Enzo won the pipe/tennis ball challenge. Jay won shrinking figure 8 champion and loudest pipe contest. We sold lot of raffles.. We donated money to ISD Pre School for Tots n Toys.. 27 bikes rolled into ISD campus on PTCO day.
A year later, May 2006 HDB had their 2nd annual poker run and events during ptco day-- We rode thru Brownsburg, the heart of Indianapolis downtown, Veterans Memorial and Crown Hill Cemetery and then GIDC. Don Castleberry won poker with full house. At PTCO we provided several games and also the hdb ladies had a booth selling food and raffles. A toy hauler was displayed there too. Poker Run donated money to ISD Pre School for Tots n Toys and Ladies of HDB donated money to ISD Elementary Dept for school supplies fund. About 45 bikes rolled into ISD campus this time.. (almost 20 more bikes this year) wow..wow...Several outsiders from Illinois, Michigan and Kentucky deaf bikers participated in this year 2006 ptco poker run.
Our membership has currently about 40 bikers now and is still growing!!!
