Cayce Remedies Help Toddler With Crohn's Disease
By Rhonda Miller
"I was terrified. Jennifer was so sick. Even on the medicine she seemed to be getting worse," says Carmele Magazzu, an A.R.E. member from Vineland, New Jersey.
That was the fall of 1990. Her year and-a-half-old daughter Jennifer wasn't even walking. She had started toddling at 14 months, but became so frail that she had to be carried everywhere.
White as a sheet, clinging, cranky, and sleeping restlessly, Jennifer's stools often contained blood or mucus.
Diagnosed with a heart murmur caused by iron-deficiency anemia, she was treated with iron, which helped her blood count, but caused the bleeding in the colon to become worse.
The problem was eventually diagnosed as Crohn's disease, an inflammation of the colon that can cause blood and mucus in the stools and debilitating diarrhea.
Jennifer's condition became so bad that she was admitted to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in October of 1990 and remained there for two weeks. During her stay, she was exposed to her roommate's meningitis and had to take additional medication.
That was the last straw for Carmele. "I had to get her out of the hospital. She was taking Prednisone and Azulfidine, but the doctors said there is actually no cure for Crohn's disease. I felt there had to be more I could do for her."
An A.R.E. member since 1982, Carmele had been looking for some answers in the Edgar Cayce readings. But she needed more guidance. Carmele's mother, Jay Scarps, an A.R.E. volunteer from Virginia Beach, had been with her granddaughter during much of her illness. Reason and intuition led Carmele and Jay to the same conclusion. The day after Jennifer was released from Children's Hospital, the three were on an airplane bound for Scottsdale, Arizona to consult with Dr. Gladys McGarey.
"Dr. Gladys greeted us with a hug and treated Jennifer delicately. It was wonderful," recalls Carmele. "In the hospital, Jennifer had been put through all that testing, all those needles. It had been traumatic for her, and for me to watch."
At the Scottsdale Holistic Medical Group, emphasis was put on gentle, holistic treatment. Continued breast-feeding was encouraged. Massage with peanut oil and with Cayce's formula of mutton tallow, turpentine, and camphor was begun. Other recommendations included a couple of drops of Glycothymoline in a cup of water once a day and aloe vera juice to soothe the digestive tract.
Dr. Gladys advised the continuation of Prednisone because it had saved the lives of so many children, as well as the other prescribed medications. Carmele was advised to read The Yeast Connection, and found that many of her family's health problems were described in the book.
The family was also encouraged to work with Cayce recommendations on acid/alkaline balance.
"Dr. Gladys gave me so much hope and inspiration," says Carmele. "To me, she is really a source of love." Three weeks later, renewed and hopeful, Jennifer, Carmele, and Jay flew home.
Carmele studied more Cayce readings and found a recommendation for a ginseng/ginger digestive tonic [Formula 208] for colitis problems. She called Dr. Gladys and got the OK to try a little for Jennifer. "She seems to digest better and she looks rosier with the tonic," says Carmele.
But caring for Jennifer at home, with no holistic doctor in the area to provide medical and emotional support, Carmele again struggled with isolation, doubt, and medical questions.
When Jennifer's condition flared up again in December of 1990, she was rushed to Children's Hospital.
"At that point, I put Jen in the Lord's care," says Carmele. "Because Dr. Gladys had given me hope I wasn't so afraid this time. I could even find humor in stressful situations."
Carmele used the time Jennifer was in the hospital to continue her research from the Cayce files on colitis and ulcerative colitis.
After two weeks in the hospital, Jennifer's bowel began to blow up with toxic mega-colon, an extremely dangerous condition in which the bowel can burst.
"In a panic, I called Dr. Gladys," says Carmele. "She advised me to ask the doctors if I could give Jennifer just a couple of tablespoons of yogurt a day." The doctors agreed and Jennifer's healing began. The bowel never again expanded during her hospital stay.
As Jennifer's condition improved and she began to eat, Carmele was persistent in strict dietary guidelines. "I requested a special diet from the hospital kitchen, with no refined sugar or flour. I brought in fresh-squeezed orange juice and homemade puddings."
The diet worked well and helped Jennifer's recovery. She was soon home and continuing with the Cayce-related treatments as well as eating fresh yogurt nearly every day.
Jennifer's debut as an example of the value of the Cayce information came at A.R.E. Congress, 1991. That's when an active, rosy-cheeked cherub was introduced by a thankful mother and grandmother.
Today at three years old, she is a normal, active child. "She's had normal stools since we started all of the things we did with Dr. Gladys. And she has no other symptoms."
While her family carefully keeps up with medical tests to monitor her health and is ever aware of the chronic nature of Crohn's disease, there has come hope and trust in the holistic recommendations made by Edgar Cayce.
"That's why I'd love to see a Cayce research hospital in Virginia Beach," says Carmele. "If he left any legacy, it's his information on healing. And his legacy helped save Jennifer's life."
