Beginner Golfer
So you're thinking about taking up this wonder game. Remember one thing and you'll be somewhat successful:
This is you against you. Nobody else.
With that said, take some lessons. It will save you lots of time and frustration and the game will be more enjoyable in the beginning.
Clubs
Before you invest in lessons you need equipment. A beginner may abuse his clubs out of frustration so my advice it to get some used clubs, this way your not investing a thousand dollars into clubs that will end up in need of repair. Trust me, I've banged a few clubs on the ground, on trees, rocks and cart paths.
I have some advertisements on this page for retailers that sell used and new clubs. After reading this compare the new clubs prices and used clubs prices. I think you'll agree that used is the way to go.

Shoes
Don't get used shoes. They stink. Golf shoes are not that expensive and are very important to your game. Size does matter. Make sure they fit. There's nothing worse that a blister when your trying to break 100 for the first time. You will find better prices on the Internet than anywhere else but I would suggest you find the shoe at your local golf shoe store then order the same pair off the Internet. Go with soft spikes. Most courses now days don't allow hard spikes anymore.

Gloves
As you begin to learn the game you will come to realize that tension anywhere in your body is not good. That's where the golf glove comes in. It allows you grip the club with less pressure, which in turn causes less tension in your hands and arms. This less tension will allow the club head to return to square at impact. There is about a thousand other things that have to go right to get that club head square but less tension in your hands and arms in a must.

Balls
As a beginner I would suggest using 'experienced' golf balls. By 'experience' I mean golf balls that have been used in the past. These balls are the ones that, if you have already played a round, landed in the water. These are good quality balls for a beginner and you won't feel so bad when you lose about 5 a round.
There are some cheaper 'non-experienced' golf balls on the market but they may not conform to USGA rules.

Golf Etiquette
This is knowledge that must be obtained. I would suggest buying a book on this subject and then pass it on to your friends who want to take up the game. This is a game of respect and honor. Once you realize what and what not to do from tee to green you will have more confidence to get out there and play this wonderful game.

If you start this game with the realization that is hard you'll be Okay. This game is extreamly challenging but it's that one shot that looked and felt so good that wil keep you coming back for more.
Good luck and keep in the short grass.
