NEW INFO - The Oranges Family of California is from the city of Pollica, in the district of Salerno, region of Campania, Italy! - Geremia indicated on his passport that his father Deodotrie or (Diodato) was from the City of Pollica. This is located south of Salerno and Mar Tirreno, Paestum......http://www.multimap.com/world/IT/Campania/Salerno/Pollica.
Geremia & his brother Francesco came to the United States from Italy in 1887-88. Their home town was Salerno which is south of Naples & Mt. Vesuvius.
Their is no knowledge of their family there. It is thought that Geremia would periodically go back to Italy from time-to-time. In the 1930's he went and was never heard from again despite efforts to contact him. Undoubtedly he was caught up in the war that was beginning to develop at that time.
His wife Camilla raised their four children and lived into her nineties. The family flourished and has evolved into it's sixth generation.

He married Signora Oranges in Italy, 1861 est. Signora was born in Italy about 1840-42 est. She died 1900 est. in Italy. They lived in Salerno, Italy.
Signori Oranges & Signora Oranges had the following children:

2 i. Francesco Oranges (Signori Oranges) -- Francesco was born in 1840-42 est. He died 1940-50's est. in San Francisco, CA. He married Mary. They had been married 11 years with no children at the time of the 1900 Census. Her parents are unknown. She was born in October 1868 in Pennsylvania. Mary died 1930's est. in unknown location. The 1900 Census says that both of her parents were born in Italy.
According to the U.S. Census 1900 he came to the U.S. in 1888 after his younger brother Geremia (1887).
Francesco was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Fair Oaks Precinct, Stockton CA, San Joaquin Co. He could speak English according to Census. He was listed as the Head of the Family at the time. The census says he was a parkkeeper. Later he was a well-known chef in San Francisco. Both his parents were born in Italy per the 1900 U.S. Census, 12th Census of the United States.

3. Geremia Oranges (Signori Oranges) was born in Italy 10/1863. Geremia died 1940-60's est. in Italy.
He married Camilla Mareno in unknown location, 1891. 1900 Census shows they were married 9 years at the time.
Camilla was born in California 10/1872. She was the daughter of Signori Mareno and Signora Mareno. Camilla died 1960's in Stockton, CA. Both parents were born in Italy. She had three (3) brothers - Jose, Dominic, Boto & one (1) sister - Grace. Her family was known to be located in the San Francisco area and they were musicians.
She used to live on American St. in Stockton. Her youngest son Les in his Cadillac convertible would take Leslie & Greg to visit her on Saturdays. She would inveritably give away little items of hers to her great-grandchildren as they visited.
Geremia immigrated, 1887. Final destination: California. His brother Frank was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Fair Oaks Precinct, Stockton CA, San Joaquin Co. He could speak English according to the census.
Geremia used to travel back and forth to Italy. He made a trip to Italy in the late 1930's & was never heard from again despite efforts by the family. The census says he was a night watchman at the time. Both his parents born in Italy.

Geremia Oranges and Camilla Mareno had the following children:
4 i. Edmund Oranges (Geremia-Signori Oranges) He married three times. He married Jean in Stockton, CA, 1930's est. Jean was born in unknown location. Jean died in Stockton, CA. He married Viola in Stockton, CA, 1950's est. Viola was born in unknown location. Viola died Nov. 1960 in Stockton, CA. She died of a cerebral hemorrage on Thanksgiving 1960.
He married Hazel in Stockton, CA, 1960's est. Hazel was born in unknown location. Both Ed & Les were U.S. Marines during the time of World War I. Neither saw any action.
"Unk" was the oldest sibling & was the handyman of the family. He had his wood shop in his backyard & would do various odd jobs as favors for the family.
He was quite a "sport" and would drive a turquoise Jaguar sports car while wearing his beret!
He was a world traveler and would bring back momentos from his trips to Africa & South America.
He recalled the "Great Earthquake of San Francisco - 1906" when he was 14 years old

She married Mr. Koch in unknown location, 1920 est. Mr. Koch was born in unknown location. Mr. died in unknown location. Leslie & Greg visited "Aunt Gen" at San Francisco in the early 60's via the Greyhound bus.

Lorraine was born in unknown location 1913. She married Donald Roberson in unknown location. Lorraine died in Los Angeles, CA. He married Mary Rowe in Stockton, CA, 1946 est. Mary was born in unknown location 1926 est. She is the daughter of unknown Rowe and Mrs. unknown Rowe. "Caryl" was apparently the last name of the doctor who delivered him.

She married Michael Grijalva in Tracy, CA, Oct. 1997. He married Adrienne Lee Bortz in Lake Tahoe, NV, 2/28/97. Adrienne was born in Cleveland, OH 9/19/42. She is the daughter of Jack David Bortz and Edna Elizabeth Mart. She had married Lawrence Guzzetta in unknown location, 11/3/63.

That same summer she traveled throughout Europe. She currently is attending a post graduate course in Spanish in Santiago Chile.
24 ii. Rebecca Annette Oranges (Gregory-Caryl-Leslie Caryl-Geremia-Signori) was born in Stockton, CA 3/7/77. Becky graduated from Lincoln High School June 4, 1995 & went on to graduate at Woodruff Costmetology Acamedy, November 17, 1997. She specializs in hair color in an upper-end salon in Beverly Hills, CA. She and her sister currently live in Westwood.
