After studying Garden Slug & Snail habits, their abilities, and trying all the other Organic and some times not so Eco Friendly alternatives, from salt, beer, netting slug wall, egg shells, raw sheep's wool, ash and charcoal, sand, gravel, sand wall, gravel wall, spike wall, glass shard wall, plastic bottles with various contents and double sided tape with toppings, we built the Eco Friendly, Organic Cosy Slug Hutt, Slug and Snail Trap, it was the only Slug Trap that we can honestly say worked.

The old thought came to mind, "if you can't beat um, join um".
It occurred to us that the only way to defeat the slippery little Thingies was to invite them to their demise by making them an offer they just couldn't refuse, a really comfy room with food to die for, and along they come, doing what they do best, eating my food, only now in The Cosy Slug Hutt, and not our vegetables. So came to life our sustainable Slug Trap.

QUIZ,

It worked so well that in one week, we cleared our third of an acre of Garden Slugs,[ at around 50/60 Slugs to Ye Olde British Lbd., or around 130 to the Kg, emptying twice a Night ] and handfuls of Snails, some of which were left for our toad, who, not being a silly toad, lived within the Slugs and Snails hiding places, alas, in this untreated Organic Garden, Fat Toad couldn't keep up with the population explosion.

Remember, Slugs are Hermaphrodite, and can lay around 700/800 eggs a year, you'll find them [their clusters of pearl like eggs just under the soil, and in small crags, not easy to find] hiding under anything that isn't too moist and will give them cover.

To remind you, look at the base of long grassy clumps, under turfs, in crevices, under stones, bricks, logs, wooden and stone walkways, edges of buildings, path edges, under hedges, borders, shrubs, and as you know, in your vegetables unless you get Proactive.

Bare in mind that you can prevent invasion by being proactive, YOU DO have a say in where the little blighters can hide, in keeping all your borders clean, grass short, removing stones, garden waste, leaf litter, etc..
If you incorporate walkways of any kind, look under them often and you'll find your effort rewarded.

As we know, slugs don't like the hot sun, or dry soil as it clogs up their works making them unable to move very far before getting scorched, dried out and immobile, a Light dry border around your veggie plot will act as a great inhibiter, keep it as dry as you can, a polythene wall dug in around your vegetables, then folded outwards on wire or angled sticks, will keep some of the dew, rain, and hose water off of the border, a cheap and effective means to help keep them out, as long as you can afford the loss of space and want to use polythene, which is ok, recycled stuff of any colour can be used, however, with clear, you can easily see the Slugs and Snails when they crawl upon it, especially at night, when they show up as black blobs in torch light, and it affords them less shelter from the sun, which when it shines through also heats the Dry soil and helps your endeavour.

To catch your Slugs,
all that is needed is a gentle walk around your garden with a torch just after dark, or on a dull rainy day, make a note of where the critters are emanating from, then set up the Slug Trap each night a few metres from or between these spots.
If badly infested, and you find you're catching more slugs than you expected, leave the trap for 2 nights, but in any case, be sure to rotate around the entire garden, and keep on doing so, for sure your neighbour's Slugs will want a meal.

A big plus is that when you inspect your catch, you'll find a good few slugs heading to the Eco Slug Trap, with a gloved hand for the squeamish, you can add these to your haul. This Organic Slug Trap is very simple, with our Innovation inside, you place old or stale food that you would otherwise bin, even if it's going off, Especially sweet fruits, like, peach, grapes or pear. Veg., lettuce, animal fat, and by the way, they just love Honeydew melon, leaving just a thin parchment where the melon skin once was.

In short, you can use most any old food that you would have sent to the bin, [you will get to know which of your food the Slugs like best], NO Poisons needed, and the Slugs that you have collected, can be recycled to your local countryside, the local rubbish tip where they can do a little more scavenging before they pop off, alternatively, place a clean bag of them into your freezer overnight to quietly put them to sleep, thereafter compost them, talking of which, keep a lookout, they do like to shelter in compost, another place where they lay their eggs.

On these days, when overcast and wet, THE VERY BEST WAY to be rid of our friends is to circuit your garden, where you'll find adults and young leaving their cover.
They'll be coming out of your boarders, hedges, clumpy grass, leaf mould, compost heap, path edges and so on. You will be surprised how many you can pick up, this only takes around an hour in our large garden, and we go out again after an hour or so, when even more are venturing out, and are looking for a meal.

WHY PAY for individual slug traps or Slug Baiters, and then SLUG BAIT, WHEN YOU CAN MAKE AS MANY AS YOU NEED from ONE set of our Cosy Hutt Trap Plans?, and not pay for ECO SLUG BAIT or baiting.

Volcanic Activity

You or your child can make this Slug Trap at home from bits and bobs you will have around or in the Garden Shed, or can buy inexpensively, a matter of Pennies, ours didn't cost A penny, as we used recycled materials, [as you can] better still, there is No Cost for Baiting.

You will be able to download the SLUG & Snail Trap Plans and also More information, photos and a guide to making Free Over-Winter Eco Slug and Snail Traps that will gather your slugs & snails for you.

NOTE:
Please Note, The Very Best way to catch your little enemies is to go hunt them down on wet days, and around dawn and dusk, or if your're feeling real angry about the loss of your food, going our during the night with a good torch and gloves for the squeamish, will bag you a load, going around your garden a few times a night for a week or so will knock back not only the slugs and snails, but vastly reduce the number of eggs laid, thus reducing future problems, as well as saving you time and plants.
