Sylvia Virag-Bajcanova - Mezzo-soprano, ArtD.

Slovakian born and educated Australian mezzo-
soprano, graduated with Master of Arts degree
and completed her Ph.D. in Bratislava. Her
research included the History of Vocal Technique
represented with the success of Lucia Popp,
Sergey Koptchak, Edita Gruberova and Peter Dvorsky.

At age 12 won First Prize in Children's Vocal
Competition. At age 14 won Second Prize at the
International Youth Vocalist competition. At age
21 Sylvia was already a soloist at the Slovakian
National Opera singing Fenena (Nabucco) with the
famous bass Sergey Koptchak. Throughout her career
she performed as a Soloist at the Theatre of Operetta
New Scene and the Chamber Opera. Recorded several
productions in many languages for television
in Prague and Bratislava.

In Vienna Austria Sylvia performed twice at the Belvedere International Singing Competition becoming a Semi-Finalist. Also performed in New York, Atlanta, Vienna, Linz, Moscow, Budapest, in many German cities and in Scotland, at the Edinburgh Music Festival in B. Martinu's opera "Julietta".

In Izmir, Turkey for three years at the State Opera, Sylvia was a Soloist, also Lecturer and Singing Instructor at the Conservatorium. In 1998 Sylvia sang Alto Solo in Beethoven's Symphony No.9 and Habanera from G. Bizet's Carmen at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall conducted by Maestro Tommy Tycho. This spectacular event has been recorded on CD and Video. For six years Sylvia has performed on Captain Cook Cruises “Opera Afloat”, at the same time teaching classical voice at The Australian Institute of Music and now she teaches classical voice privately and performs at concerts in Australia and in Europe.

In 2005 Slovakia, Sylvia sang at a Gala Concert with
Ilona Tokody, Jozsef Gregor, Peter Dvorsky and Otto
Klein accompanied by the Slovakian National Opera
Orchestra. In 2004 and 2005 she performed opera
arias and musicals on Budapest TV. In Sydney Sylvia
gave recitals at the Goethe Institut and at The
Liszt Society singing popular songs composed by
F. Liszt ("Oh, quand je dors"), R. Schumann song
cycle ("Frauenliebe und Leben" Op.42) and songs by
V. Bellini, A. Dvorak, P.I. Tchaikovsky and R. Strauss.

The Slovakian and Hungarian Embassies in Australia are regularly asking Sylvia to perform at their Gala Events.

Sylvia organizes her own concerts, inviting special guests to promote classical music to all communities; Annual Gala Christmas Concert, Easter Concert, Italian Concert "From Palermo to Milano", Verdi Concert "Festival of Music" including popular Operettas by I. Kalman, F. Lehar, J. Strauss.

Her repertoire includes all major mezzo-soprano operatic roles, oratorios, operettas, musicals and more than 250 songs in eleven languages.
