Babysitting Tips for Starters
Hey everybody! Are you starting to babysit? Here are a few tips to get noticed, do it right, and get the green:
GET NOTICED(HOW TO PROMOTE YOURSELF):
This can be a very simple thing, if you do it right. Of course, parents want to know that their children are safe while thiy're out, and want a responsible, and mature individual to take care of their "little baby." To promote yourself and get noticed, you should tell all of your friends that you are babysitting. Tell them to tell their parents, who will tell their friends, and voila! You have a baysitting job.
You might also want to put your name in your community newsletter. Many communities have this, and a lot of them have a teen page. This is a surefire way to get noticed and on your way.
WHAT TO DO WITH THE KIDS:
One thing that can always be useful is to bring a bag of toys that you think would interest the child you're babysitting. Try to pay attention to them and play with them instead of sitting around watching TV all night. Try games such as hide and go seek(if the child is 8 or older, you don't want them lost) or just a simple game of catch. Younger girls enjoy playing with Barbies and dolls, so try to do that with them. You could also try playing "pretend house" with young girls. Boys are always tricky. They would enjoyb if you played blocks, or some other game that he might like. Always make sure that you let the child pick what you do, DO NOT BE BOSSY.
RATES,HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU ASK FOR?
It really depends on how old you are, and how long you have been babysitting. if you are about 13, and have been babysitting for a while, 5 dollars an hour would be a reasonable price. But if you are just starting, 3 dollars an hour would be a good rate, since you are not that experienced.
Try not to be too pricey because you want the parents to call you back again.
HOW OLD SHOULD I BE?
By law, you must be 13 to be able to babysit. Some people start when they are younger, but it is not within the law. If you are under 13, being a "mother's helper" would prepare you to be a better babysitter when you are ready.
