Hand Carved Dolls by Susan Aye
Pictured is my final doll, Maria Poppet from the book Memoirs of a London Doll, by Margery Fisher. Maria is a special order doll that I started working on about a year ago and have devoted most of my carving time to her. Maria is carved from basswood and has numerous coats of gesso under her paint. She has lovely blue glass eyes and her features are painted on with oils. Her auburn hair is the finest quality mohair that I've ever worked with. I designed and hand sewed all her clothing which includes antique lace unders and camisole, muslin underskirt and Egyptian cotton dress. Her black kid leather shoes were made by Billie Aye (after several failed attempts by myself!) and her stockings, silk knit. Unfortunately, most of my pictures of Maria did not turn out very well and this is the best picture I have of her dressed. She is a very special doll residing with a very special friend of mine.
I am no longer carving dolls for the general public - only for friends and family. Thank you to all my doll friends for believing in me and providing wonderful homes for my dolls. I'm on Facebook -- please keep in touch.
Thanks,
Susan
