Our Lady Peace are gearing up to release their new disc, Gravity. The album is the first they've recorded with Bob Rock. Given that Rock's studio is in Maui, the OLP lads had an opportunity to take advantage of the Hawaiian sun and surf.

Just how are their surfing skills? "They're getting there," says OLP singer Raine Maida . "Y'know, the whole thing was so relaxing. We were used to working 18 hour days when recording and after two months you get burned out. Soon it didn't matter if you were working four hours or 18 hours, it all felt the same."

When they haven't been surfing or recording, Maida and company have been keeping up with the latest and greatest rock sounds.

Among their current faves are The Strokes. "The cool thing is that they sound like the record when they play," Maida says of the band. "It's very real and live-sounding and I like that." He also notes that "my favourite of all that stuff is The White Stripes. They're just amazing and live those guys just slay."

Maida is also a huge fan of Texan rockers ?And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead : "Jeremy [Taggart] saw them live in Vancouver and said they're amazing. I just love the new record. We'd love to hook up with a band like that and tour for awhile. It's just inspiring that it's all about live energy, about going over the top every night."

Have these bands affected OLP's sound? "I think it's affected our sound in terms of how we're not trying to just reproduce the records right now," says Maida. "It's really more about live energy. Our new guitar player Steve [Mazur] is such a visceral, play-your-ass-off-and-enjoy kind of guy. He's not technical at all, which is really refreshing for us."

Gravity hits stores June 18. OLP will also play Halifax's Citadel Hill on June 30, as part of a pre-Canada Day show that also features The Tragically Hip, Sarah Harmer and Buck 65.
