MY WORLD COIN COLLECTION
I did not use someone else's collection as a model when I started mine. However, I must admit that lately I have borrowed features from other collections. Notably, I now count types as a measure of growth. I was always interested in expanding to new countries and long ago decided to use the Krause-Mishler Standard Catalog of World Coins as my guide. If Krause gives it a section heading, then I call it a country. If it is has a sub-heading under the 'mother' country's main heading, I don't count it separately. The changes in organization of the 2003-4-5 catalogs caused me to reorganize and count quite a few more countries. (I have counted ancient Rome, the Chola Kingdom of ancient India, and several countries found only in the catalogs for other eras.)
Some collectors only collect circulating (or circulated) coinages. I also collect coins that are non circulating legal tender (NCLT). This covers many countries which use only paper currency or another nation's coinage in daily business and issue NCLT coins for collectors as a revenue producing measure. Especially note the many small island nations in this category. This may be a fraud perpetrated on the collectors, but the coins are almost always beautiful specimens and the value seems to endure.
So those are my rules for my collection. I know that others count differently, as is their right. Also, I am in some cases a 'date collector', especially with my U.S. coins, my old large cents, and anything over 100 years old. I guess each person's best way to collect is just to do what gives him pleasure. I am adding this page because it gives me pleasure to share it with you.
