SIR SYED AHMED KHAN FOUNDATION, PUNE

"Sir Syed Ahmed Khan Foundation" was established in the memory of Hon. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the Founder of the Aligarh Muslim University.

It is a secular, non-profit organization working towards the eradication of illiteracy, gender inequality, superstitions and dogmas from society.

The main aim of the Foundation is to work for social and educational upliftment of people residing in slums and rural areas in the state of Maharashtra.

It is involved in community empowerment, health education, income generation and environment activities in Pune District.

Initiated by **Dr. Anwar Shaikh, a Social Worker and a College Teacher in 1996, SSAK Foundation is now working in slums in Pune. The core goal of the foundation is to increase awareness amongst the target population regarding their rights and privileges and to prepare the students for formal education.

The foundation serve as a small scale social catalyst, helping and encouraging youth from slums to utilize their full potential, helping small groups to become self-reliant and to combat the oppressive factors in their environment. Our success in this field has encouraged us to do more.

Today, educated unemployment is also a very complex problem among youth. This is a very serious problem and poses a grave threat to the social and political stability. Adequate organizations are also not there for giving vocational and professional guidance to these educated youth. Ignorance on the part of educated people about possibilities and avenues of employment is also responsible for their remaining unemployed. Due to lack of sufficient training facilities, the chances of employment are also less. The problem of the educated unemployment is as far from solution as ever. Indeed, it has been getting from bad to worse.

Committed to a process of development, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan Foundation, Pune, wants to inculcate in the minds of educated unemployed youth, that they can also do better, if adequate training and proper Educational, Vocational and self employment guidance is provided to them.

Presently, our Foundation is organizing
1.Vocational and Career guidance camps in Schools, slums and Mohallas 2. Running a Computer Training Center 3.An Institute of Child Education and Development for teachers’ training and 4.A School named as “Adarsh Open School” for the drop outs.

The Foundation has embarked on a large ambitious project of setting up a Self Employment and Vocational Training Centre for women, Competitive Examination Guidance Center for the students preparing for various competitive examinations such as IAS/IPS, Police Sub-Inspectors, Bank Probationary Officers, Clerks etc. a Placement cell and a library for primary, high school and college education.

Due to weak financial condition, many girls from slums could not take education after 7th, 10th and 12th Std. We have deep rooted programmes for these girls and women, which involve majority participation of the local people.

We shall be grateful, if well-wishers and donors come forward and help us to fulfill the objectives of our Foundation.

Give us strength to carry on. You can play your vital role by participating in the activities of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan Foundation, with your money, time and skills. If you have a way you think you can help, let us know. We will do our utmost to put it to the best use we can find.

These drop outs will be encouraged to pursue education through proper guidance in studies by expert teachers, in a very formal way.

***Night Study Centres & Library in Slums : There is a need to start Night Study Centres and Library in slum areas, as the students after coming from their schools couldn’t find place to study in their houses. This study centers and libraries will run under the guidance of a volunteer, who will help the students of local area. Providing of educational aid for the mental, physical and social development of a child to prepare him for future primary education.

***Entrepreneurship Development Programme: (EDP) : SSAK Foundation will soon start an EDP to train and support unemployed youth who intend initiating their career as entrepreneurs. The foundation will also gets them in touch with like minded institutes and organisations. This Programme will empower youth and women to generate income.

***Vocational Training & Self Employment Opportunities : The foundation intends to start a Vocational Training and self employment programme for the youth and women from slum areas. Courses like Sewing and Embroidery, Beautician, Photography and Video Shooting, Electric Appliances repairing, Electrician, Wireman, Motor Rewinding, Plumbing etc will be started. ***Youth Development Programme (YDP) : Networking with youth and members of youth organizations, student bodies and persons who are working with youth to share their experiences and build their capacities through conferences, training programmes and workshops.

***Formation of Self help groups of women and youth. : This is a very interesting idea. Forming a youth and women group, see that they are motivated not only for saving but also for doing useful work through groups for the poverty eradication and introduce inter-loaning to their members. This protects them from the clutches of private money lenders and allows maximum percentage of their profits to be utilized for their own families.

***WOMEN EMPOWERNMENT
SSAKF plans to launch a cadre building in order to build the capacities of the women to no bounds. These women will be given Legal literacy training, Leadership skills training and issues based training so that their capabilities are built to negotiate as and when they feel right for the cause and for the upliftment of their community and the benefits to their family members.

***Child Adoption Scheme : To seek out needy children and provide the help required by the child in its particular situation
