MSU's progress pleases McCallie
AUSTIN, Texas -- If ever there was a moment to cast doubt on a program, this was it. Coach Joanne P. McCallie's eighth-seeded Spartans had just lost, 80-61, to top-seeded Texas in Tuesday's second round of the NCAA women's basketball tournament. Michigan State had stayed close for 25 minutes before its defense fell asleep and the Longhorns raced on to the Sweet Sixteen.

QB battle begins again at MSU
EAST LANSING -- Last season, Michigan State waited until fall to name a starting quarterback. Here we go again. Last year, Drew Stanton was named the starter following spring practice -- for the time. Senior Jeff Smoker took the job when he was reinstated from his suspension in late August.

Longhorns romp over Spartans
AUSTIN, Texas -- Michigan, your NCAA madness is officially over. The state's final tournament team, No. 8 seed MSU, gave No. 1 seed Texas a small scare Tuesday night in round two of the NCAA Women's Tournament, but for the most part, the Longhorns were too experienced, too talented, and too deep.

Spartans face tall hurdle in No. 1 'Horns

Eastern, MSU play in women's NCAA this weekend

Michigan State has tough wait until next season
SEATTLE -- And so it ended like it began -- with Michigan State coach Tom Izzo saying the team wasn't tough enough and his players looking like they were sick of hearing it. One of the greatest one-step-away teams in history took a first-round NCAA tournament exit Thursday night with a 72-66 loss to Nevada.

DREW SHARP: You could sense this loss coming
SEATTLE -- Tom Izzo breathed a nervous sigh, standing in the tunnel while watching the closing moments of Stanford's blowout victory over 16th-seeded Texas-San Antonio. It was another 45 minutes or so before Michigan State was scheduled to take the floor in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

MITCH ALBOM: It's one and done for MSU
SEATTLE -- On a drizzly afternoon in the land of endless coffee, Michigan State wrote the final entry in its season ledger and closed the book, leaving one column full and one column empty. The empty side reads "Highlights." The full side reads "Disappointments."

Spartans fall short in Pack's late surge
SEATTLE -- Michigan State, as always, was right there. Michigan State, as always, came up short. Coming up short was the Spartans' unofficial anthem this season, and the finale came Thursday night with a 72-66 loss to 10th-seeded Nevada in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Davis aims for title, not NBA
SEATTLE -- Paul Davis made his return to Michigan State next season official. As in, official, official. Davis left no doubt about his return after MSU's 72-66 loss to Nevada in the first round of the NCAA tournament Thursday night.

Northern upsets Spartans, 2-1
The wild ride continued for Tuomas Tarkki. Tarkki, a junior from Finland, made 35 saves to help Northern Michigan upset Michigan State, 2-1, in the CCHA tournament quarterfinals at Joe Louis Arena on Thursday. Northern snapped Michigan State's seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1) and might have ended the Spartans' season.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Pagel's belief in MSU rewarded
Julie Pagel's numbers are far from glamorous at Michigan State. She averages 5.9 points a game off the bench. She's sixth on the team in minutes played but third in fouls committed. But as the only senior who plays regularly and the lone four-year player, Pagel understands more than her teammates where the program has been and what back-to-back NCAA tournament berths mean.

The looking glass -- To hit jackpot vs. Nevada, MSU must rebound as it once did
SEATTLE -- Three weeks ago, something monumental happened during Michigan State's infamous War drill, in which players go all-out to collect a rebound. A fight broke out between reserves Tim Bograkos and Andy Harvey. Bograkos was so happy about it, he could have cried. "That's the way it used to be," he said with a wistful sigh.

Record: 25-12-2. First round: Beat Nebraska-Omaha in three games.

DREW SHARP: Spartans' Brown mourns slain friend
EAST LANSING -- Innocence, like youth, is lost on the young. They believe they're invulnerable, impervious to destiny's cruel whims. When they ask "Why?" it's imperative for the wiser, more experienced hand to mold such mysteries within the practical framework of "Why not?"

No master plan behind Nevada's rise to NCAAs
SEATTLE -- Nevada coach Trent Johnson never envisioned that in his fifth year the Wolf Pack would make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1985. He never envisioned the Western Athletic Conference tournament or regular-season championships, either. Actually, he didn't envision anything at all.

SUPER SHOWINGS: Paige's goal helps Irish join CCHA's final six
Freshman forward Jason Paige made an immediate impact on Notre Dame's penalty-killing unit this season. But his offense has been a pleasant surprise and it's one of the reasons Notre Dame is making its third consecutive trip to the CCHA Super Six at Joe Louis Arena.

Izzo likes MSU's tournament chances
EAST LANSING -- Tom Izzo never went home Sunday night. He wrapped himself in a Detroit Lions blanket and fell asleep on the couch in his office. Surprisingly, the Michigan State coach didn't have nightmares. Instead, he woke up with refreshing clarity and renewed optimism Monday about the Spartans' chances in the NCAA tournament.

SEVERAL SPARTANS GARNER AWARDS
The big question heading into Michigan State's annual basketball awards banquet Monday night was, who would be most valuable player? It turned out not to be such a difficult choice after all. Sophomore center Paul Davis, the Spartans' leading scorer and rebounder, was the team's and media's choice for MVP.

DREW SHARP: NCAA shuns Big Ten; can MSU & Co. do something about it?
EAST LANSING -- Plainspoken as always, Tom Izzo referred to Michigan State's difficulties against the nationally ranked as the "Spartans' dropping their pants in public." Perhaps "wardrobe malfunction" is a more fitting description in today's excessively regulatory environment.

MSU gets 7th seed, Nevada

The Spartans were awarded a seven seed and will play 10th-seeded Nevada at the Key Arena in Seattle in the first round of the NCAA tournament. However, that wasn't the payoff.

68-66 loss to Wisconsin crushes Spartans
INDIANAPOLIS -- How many championships can Wisconsin cost Michigan State in a single season? The answer is two. Twelve days after the Badgers devastated MSU on its home floor in overtime and denied the Spartans a share of the Big Ten regular-season title, Wisconsin demoralized the Spartans again.

DREW SHARP: Spartans take out frustration on Northwestern
INDIANAPOLIS -- Here's hoping Michigan State kept the receipt on that unused Big Ten championship banner so it can get a refund. "I've heard them all over the past week," associate athletic director Mark Hollis said Friday afternoon, referring to the digs the university took over its premature -- and ill-fated -- championship celebration plans 10 days ago.

Spartans have little trouble with Wildcats
INDIANAPOLIS -- Michigan State beating Northwestern in the Big Ten quarterfinals Friday night isn't a story. Who the Spartans play next is. A 68-55 victory over the sixth-seeded Wildcats set up what is so far the most appealing matchup of the tournament.

Spartans' resiliency tested again
INDIANAPOLIS -- If this were boxing, Michigan State would be punch-drunk and ready to retire by now. But like Rocky did in so many of his movies, the Spartans somehow have managed
