Our Ancestor Solomon Henderson

Solmon Henderson was born May 25, 1886 to Evan and Wealthy Ann in Starkville (Oktibbeha County), MS. Solomon's family migrated from North and South Carolina.

In the early 1900's Evan Henderson moved his family to Money (Leflore County), MS. Solomon's sibling were James, Evan Dinh and Mary.

On December 25, 1906 he married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Rogers or as we affectionately called her "Mother" or "Mudtha." To their union eleven children were born and raised in Money, MS: Wertha Lee, Ora, Rosie Lee, Samuel, Susie Bell, Solomon II, Irene, Ollie Mae, Docia, and Mack Ree. Poppa called mother "Sis. "Lizzie" and she called him "Bre" Solomon. He was considerate, unselfish and believed in taking care of his wife and family.

The Church of God in christ was a major part of poppa's life. At an early age he became a member under the leadrship of the elder Smith in Starkville, MS. According to the 1900 MS census, poppa was 12 years old and they were still living in Starkville. Later the family moved to Money, MS. As a young adult he united with the Church of God in Christ in Money, MS pastored by his brother, the Overseer James Henderson. In 1954, poppa and mother moved to Greenwood, MS and became members of St. Luke C.O.G.I.C. pastored by the Eloder J.L. Pleas. Poppa was a faithful and dedicated deacon of the church. even though he coulfd not read or write, he was knowledgeable of the bible. He would have the grandchildren read to him. Then he would repeat the verses verbatim. He walked to church every week and was always on time for Sunday School, morning worship service, and weekly night services.

Fond Memories:

* He loved RC cola, but would not drink root beer because of the
word "beer"
* Kept his head shaved bald. This is not a new trend because he
wore this style more than 40 years agao. He would sit on the
front porch with a pany ogf soapy water, razor and a mirror
lathering his head and face and shaving them clean.
* Although poppa couldn't read or write, he was proud of the fact
that he could write his name.
* Loved sitting on the screen-in front porch of their house.
* Always friendly and easy to talk to.
