Soldotna is famous for the Kenai River and the largest King Salmon on record, 97 pounds, and for Red Salmon runs in large numbers beginning as early as the second week of July to as late as mid-August. The less volatile kings can be fished from mid-May through July 31. Silver runs begin early August and are often fished through September.

Centrally located between Seward and Homer, Soldotna is a short day trip to anywhere on the Sterling highway, and a little over three hours from Anchorage. The avid fisherman can enjoy salmon and halibut fishing all summer long, with early king salmon runs Anchor Point and the Homer Spit, and red runs in June near Cooper Landing and Kasilof. Trout and Grayling are also fished in the Cooper Landing area. Enjoy scenic canoe trails near Sterling, mountain bike, hiking, and horseback riding along the way and past Cooper Landing, the beautiful Exit Glacier Trail near Seward, and sea kayaking, and halibut, salmon and scenic charters in Seward and Homer. A local plane charter provides bear viewing with salmon fishing. Three golf courses are local to Soldotna, and the summer league Peninsula Oilers are a great bargain for the family.
