Or a Tale of Two FamiliesThis page will document our search for the Ancestorsof theSTEVENS FAMILY.We are theSTEVENS/ST JOHN/GRAVES/ST CLAIR/LENOX/POTTERGATES/HOWELL/THRASHER/FILSON/BOWEN/FLOWER/NOEL/FEURTFAMILYOur Father Joseph Phillip Theodore Stevens was born on October 5, 1905 in Dillon, Montana and married our Mother Alma Eleanor St. John [the daughter of Robert Coulbourne St. John of Spokane, WA and Rosa Graves the daughter of Cincinnatus Graves and Rachel Eveline St. Clair], around 1932 in California. Joe and Alma had 12 children, Joanne Alma b. May 5, 1933 d. February 19, 1989; Robert Joseph b. July 10, 1934; Joseph Phillip b. July 7, 1935 Amaris Mary Rose b. August 17, 1937; David Stevens b. 1938 d. 1938; Felicia Elizabeth b. December 7, 1939; Paul Charles b. February 10 ,1941; Daniel b. January 1942 d. January 1942; Carol Ruth b. May 30, 1943; Nancy Rose b. October 27, 1945; Richard James b. May 27, 1949 d. 1957; Gene Douglas b. April 3, 1952. Our Father died July 9, 1982 at 77 years of age and our Mother died August 21, 1997 at 88 years of age. Our search began several years ago when we received the following information that our Great Grandfather was Adam Stevens of Hollidaysburg, PA who married Caroline Potter around 1850-1860 as best we can tell. Their son Joseph Phillip Stevens {b. December 8, 1866 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania} married Mary Loretta Lenox {b. February 1, 1877 in St. Joseph, MO} the Daughter of James Lenox {b. December 28, 1849} [the son of William Lenox and Emma Mira Potter] and Margaret Elizabeth Gates {b. March 11, 1851 } [the daughter of Harvey S. Gates and Rhoda Thrasher] in Dillon Montana on February 22, 1900. "AN UPDATE TO OUR SAGA" From Cambria Freeman dated Oct. 19, 1906 "Found Dead In Bed Mrs. Caroline Stevens, who lived in Cambria Township, was found dead in bed Thursday morning by her son Chris Stevens. Death was the result of heart failure. She is survived by these children: Chris of Ebensburg, Mrs. Lizzie Reppard of Philadelphia, Philip of New Mexico, Michael of Washington D.C. Mrs. Mary Oaks of Johnstown and Caroline Stevens of Mundy's Corners. The funeral took place at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Interment was made in Lloyd's Cemetery. Mrs. Stevens was 82 years of age. She was well known throughout the north of the county." Having found this information we were able to locate some of the children on the 1870 Census. We found Christ b. 1861 living with the family of Peter Eligh in Carroll Twp. Cambria Co., PA. We found Lizzie b. 1856 living with the family of Michael and Elizabeth [Potter] Buck near East Sharpsburg, Taylor Twp. Blair Co., PA. We then found Caroline b. 1865 living with the family of Martin Munday in Jackson Twp., Cambria Co., PA. We haven't yet found the other children yet on the 1870 census but they must be there somewhere. Neither have we found GGGMA Caroline. The above OBIT confirms the information we received years ago about the siblings of our Grand Father Joseph Philip. The names we were given were Elizabeth and Mary. Philip and Michael. We found Mary four years ago as she had married Harry Oakes in 1895. We have located the descendants of Harry and Mary living in New Castle, PA. The Newkirks. Harry and Mary's daughter Emma maried Ben Newkirk and had a son Benjamin H. who married Volleta Dickson. They had one son and Three daughters. We recently were contacted by Ed Bergh who is descended from Annie E. Stephens the daughter of Christ and Anna Reppard. Christ and Anna had seven children [Elry b. 1882, Arthur b. 1891, Rachel b. 1895, Frank b. 1900, Elisha b. 1903, J Webster b. 1906, Beulah b. abt. 1908]. We found out that there were nine children in all in the family of Adam and Caroline. Elizabeth b. 1856 Philip b. 1858 Mena B. 1859. Christ b. 1861, Michael b. 1863, Mary b. 1864. Caroline b. 1865 Joseph Philip B. 12/8/1866 and George b. 8/2/1869. George died in 1875. We figure that Adam died in the spring of 1969 after George was conceived. It appears that all the children were farmed out to relatives and other German folks probably from the same area of Germany as were Adam and Caroline. "Hesse Darmstadt" and posb. Baden. Caroline [Potter] Stevens was born February 26, 1821 in Germany. Now our search will concentrate on locating the Families of Philip, Michael and Lizzie as well as the Three Sons on Christ Stevens, Arthur, Frank, and Elisha. J. Webster died in 1947. We next began the search for our more distant ancestors and to date we have gotten several lines clear back to the 1300's.For instance we have taken the THRASHER/DRESCHER/AUGENSTEIN/DROLLINGER line back to the 1300's. Then we found the Family tree of William FLOR or FLOWER the Sherrif of Rutland circa 1350. We have taken the NOEL/FEURT Families back to Europe in the 1600's. We are also working on the link between our Great Great Grandfather Thomas Ives St. CLAIR and the SINCLAIRS of Scotland. I came across a nice tidbit the other day. It seems that William the Conqueror's family name was "St. Clair".
