Town of Smoky Lake

Welcome to the "Pumpkin Capital of Alberta". Located approximately 105 km. northeast of Edmonton at the junction of Highway #28 and Secondary Highway #855, we are just a little over an hours drive from Edmonton, Alberta.

There are two versions of how Smoky Lake got its name. There is a 12 mile long lake 3 miles west of the town. This lake always had a haze over the waters appearing as rising smoke. Thus the native Cree Indians called it Smoking Lake.

Another possible origin of the name may be from the fact that the Cree Indians regularly gathered at a site near the lake to smoke pipes during their hunts. The Indian name for the site was Smoking Place.

Whether Smoking Lake or Smoking Place, the early white settlers that arrived began to use the name Smoky Lake.

Located within the Kalyna Tourist Destination (Kalyna means high bush cranberries), the Town of Smoky Lake has many historical sites to see and is central to many lakes which provide camping, fishing and boating. We have a 9-hole golf course which boasts one of the finest greens in Alberta.

It is with pride that we are the "Pumpkin Capital of Alberta". Smoky Lake's greatest event is it's annual Pumpkin Weigh-in and is held the first Saturday of October every year. Competition is fierce to see who has the heaviest pumpkin. Our Town is bustling with over 3,000 people that come to witness the weighing in of these huge pumpkins and who come to enjoy all the other activities taking place that day such as the Farmer's Market, Art Show, Square Dancing, Pig roast, and Threshing Bee and other activities.
