As I type this, on 8 March 2002, the world is facing an explosive situation in the Middle East and it revolves around the Israel – Palestinian dispute as to
WHO REALLY OWNS JERUSALEM ?
because the answer to that vital question could well determine whether or not we go into a Third World War and whether civilization as we know it will continue to exist.
Israel is such a tiny nation, no bigger than Wales, but of unimaginable significance, specially since 11 Sept. 2001, because major events since that tragic day are tending to centre around Israel and, in particular, Jerusalem which is being claimed by two opposing factions – the Nation of Israel and that of Islam .
It is so difficult for the average person to decide this issue because both sides - Israeli and Arab / Islamic – are exercising considerable brain-washing tactics. Even right-wing Christian fundamentalists, some of whom are keen to see the coming of “Armageddon”, can prejudice one’s judgment in this regard.
Basically, the dispute revolves around the question of Nationhood and the Legal Ownership of Jerusalem. Both Israel and Islamic Palestinians claim the city as their Holy Place of Worship, however, Israeli Nationhood, with Jerusalem as its capital, can be traced back to 1312 BC. and that is a long while before Islam was founded nearly 2000 years later.
ARAB REFUGEES IN ISRAEL: Almost since the inception of the Nation of Israel, there have been Arab refugees in Israel who could not give their total allegiance to Israeli Law. Islam is a monotheistic faith, totally opposed to democratic principles as we understand them in Western society. The same situation prevails today and any Muslims who live under such systems as we enjoy in today’s “Free World, will feel the urge to break free to set up their own brutal and unjust Islamic “Shariah” law. For this reason, Arab Muslims living in Israel, preferred to remain separate, not only in a religious sense, but also politically, calling themselves “Palestinians”. Any modern Western nations, with democratic principles, and which give asylum to Islamic refugees, runs a serious risk of having their whole political infrastructure undermined by those who owe allegiance to only one authority – the god Allah. That can throw them into open, militant conflict with the ethical way of life we have inherited through our contact with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, with its holistic values and respect for women as equal to males.
It was not until 1967, two decades after Israel was established as a modern State, that Israel, with Jerusalem as its cultural capital, was officially recognized as such by the international family of nations. In fact, Jewish people have had control over Jerusalem as their cultural capital for the past 3,300 years, dating back to the Jewish conquest of 1272 BC, a claim which Islamic people reject.
Islamic Arabs claim that they had control of Jerusalem for a long period but their occupation and domination since the conquest of 635 AD lasted for only 22 years.
There is no record in all history to show that Jerusalem was the capital of any Arab or Muslim territory. Even during the period of Jordanian occupation, Jerusalem never was made the capital city by the Jordanian authorities and, during that period, Arab leaders visiting Jordan, never called at Jerusalem.
Muslims claim that Jerusalem is one of their Holy Cities over which they must have political and spiritual control, however, Jerusalem is not mentioned in the Koran while in the Jewish Scriptures – the Tanach – Jerusalem is mentioned more than 700 times. Nor is there any reference in the Koran of the prophet Mohammed ever having visited Jerusalem. On the other hand, Jewish history records that King David was the founder of the City of Jerusalem . Muslims are claiming that Jerusalem is one of their key cities and must be reclaimed in the name of the god, Allah, however, if that is so, why do they disrespectfully turn their backs on Jerusalem when they bow to Mecca five times a day?
One big question relates to the Middle East crisis of 1948 which resulted in the movement of hundreds of thousands of Arab and Jewish refugees. Why did the Islamic leaders of other Arab nations in the area, encourage Islamic Arab refugees to leave Israel when they could have told them to settle in Jerusalem, if the latter was thought to be one of their Muslim holy cities?
It is very significant to note that, at a time when millions of Muslims are fleeing their own countries, for various reasons, some being legitimate reasons and others not, affluent Arab nations are not absorbing Muslim refugees from other nations !!! This is in spite of the fact that Muslims are discouraged in the Koran, from having any intimate relationships with “Infidels” or “People of the Book” except perhaps to convert them to Islam first by “gentle” persuasive “Jihad”, and if that fails and is necessary - violent “Jihad”. The Koran orders Muslims to kill those non-Muslims who refuse to surrender to the god Allah. Arab Muslim refugees, numbering over 100 million during the last 5 decades, constitute the only refugee group that has not found asylum in lands of their own Islamic brethren --- WHY ?
Australia, the land of my birth and citizenship is being censured for “Violating Human Rights” by not immediately granting asylum to Islamic refugees who come to our country without valid travel documents. What the world needs to know is that even certain Arab / Islamic nations refuse such illegal refugees who seek to settle in their territories without valid immigration documentation.
In the present Arab – Israeli dispute, eight individual Muslim nations, excluding the Palestinians, face possible war with ONE nation – Israel. For these Islamic nations, if previous such conflicts are considered, their situation could be quite precarious because, although they initiated all five wars, they lost each time while the ONE nation of Israel was the victor each time.
Israel, for its own defense, continues to occupy the West Bank and Gaza Strip because of the Islamic threat to destroy “The People of the Book” including the Nation of Israel. The Charter of the PLO still upholds that Koranic injunction in spite of the fact that Israel has turned over to the Palestinian Authority most of the West bank and Gaza Strip to be governed by the Palestinians as autonomous territory.
Also, in spite of the present tension and Israel’s brutal behavior in some areas of its rule, Israel has endeavored to preserve the sanctity of Islamic and Christian religious sites, however, during the period of Jordanian rule, Jewish religious sites were desecrated, with Jews being denied access to their places of worship.
It is sometimes asked why the United Nations does not take cognizance of the extremely dangerous situation which could flare up into a catastrophic conflagration at any time, but dare I say that the U.N. has not shown much impartiality in this regard. Note that, of the 175 related Security Council Resolutions passed before 1990, 97 were directed AGAINST Israel. Similarly, of the 690 Resolutions passed by the General Assembly of the U.N., in relation to Israel before 1990, a total of 429 were directed AGAINST Israel !!
This makes it appear that THE UNITED NATIONS IS BIASED AGAINST ISRAEL , also evidenced by the fact that, during the Jordanian occupation, when 58 Jewish synagogues were destroyed, along with the ancient Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives, the U.N. manifested no apparent concern and also failed to take action when Jews were prevented from assembling at their sacred Western Wall and worshipping at the Temple Mount.
Now, as the violence escalates and the possibility of a Full-Scale War increases, we need to decide where injustice prevails and what can be done to achieve reconciliation. Certainly, there is no military solution.
