Beans & Cornbread (soul food)
All the soulful comforts in one place.
Hearty, Southern-style cooking and cordial hospitality are assured in this purple-hued dining room adorned with vintage African-American magazine covers and owner Patrick Coleman's family photographs. All the soulful comforts you can think of -- meatloaf, babyback ribs, fried pork chops, collard greens, black-eyed peas, macaroni and cheese -- are on hand here.

East Franklin
Come to Rivertown and find yourself Down Home. You know you're in for a soulful experience when you can order sweet tea, and East Franklin's is about as good a version of this Southern standard as you'll find north of Tennessee. This old warehouse turned upscale soul food restaurant is airy and spacious, meaning that a muted roar of conversations can permeate your dining atmosphere. But who cares? It's the sound of other people enjoying themselves---just as you are. This is a place for avid eaters. We come here mostly for the vegetable side dishes, since they're ample and tasty. Try the collards, mix your peas with white rice, go for the sweet potatoes, and fall in love with great gobs of macaroni and cheese. Carnivores will appreciate pork chops or the moist, comforting meatloaf. There's a succulent catfish, too. But the piece de resistance is fried chicken, cooked from scratch. Give yourself an extra long break for lunch and try some, but don't tell your mama how good it was.

Location:
1440 E. Franklin St.
Detroit, MI 48207

Fox Theatre

Thanks to the Fox's Byzantine-revival architecture, two-ton chandelier and dazzling neon marquee. The Fox had its heyday during the original Motown revues, when it acted as a launching pad for many a superstar, including Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and the Supremes. Still the nation's largest movie place, the Fox's 5,000-plus seats now lend themselves nicely to huge, mom-pleasing national acts like Whitney Houston or Lord of the Dance, roving Broadway shows and, rarely, the occasional film screening.

Location:
2211 Woodward Ave.
Detroit, MI 48201
