The Singleton Quest

The Singleton Quest

---------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the story of my branch of the Singleton Family. I post it here as a tribute to the hardships my ancesters endured to try to make life better for their families and decendants. As I researched my family tree I have found many heart breaking stories that sometimes left me filled with grief and sadness and with a strong desire to somehow go back and rescue them or at least try to help them in some way. Of course I can not and the only thing I can do is tell their stories here, to thank them for their sacrifices and to be thankful that, after all, their struggles were sucessful and a delayed blessing for those of us who survive them.
Ralph Singleton

STORIES:
George W. Singleton
George and his family left Arkansas some time after 1893 and before 1900. They are shown in Goodwater on the 1900 census. His youngest daughter Mittie was born in Arkansas in 1893. They came to Goodwater
Indian Territory in a covered wagon pulled by oxen. George W stepped on a rusty nail while building a house near Goodwater and died of blood poisoning before May of 1901. This is according to stories told by my Grandmother Rose who married George's oldest son, my grandfather Robert L. (Lee).

James M Singleton
James M. the 2nd of George W's sons died also
around the same time and also of blood poisoning.
They were buried together in a field in the Piney woods near their home. The location of their graves is not known. My father remembers seeing the grave sites when he was a young boy. My grand mother said that James was a very nice boy and she liked him a lot and probably would have married him had he not died. She ended up marrying my grand father "Lee" instead. They had a long and happy life together
and are still revered by all of us who remember them. More about them later.

Martha A Singleton
Martha Ann, George W's wife, continued to live in the Goodwater area for several years after Georges's death. Around 1913 Mittie the youngest daughter married a James Smiley from Sapulpa, Ok. They lived
for a while in Bartlesville and moved to Okmulgee in 1918 where he had gotten a job in the oilfield. Martha lived with them at that time.
On June 2 1918 the women had brought lunch for the men who were working at a gasoline plant. After having a picnic in a nearby pecan grove the men were finishing up their work when a spark ignited gasoline fumes in the area. They may have been fixing a flat tire on the car. It was on a Sunday afternoon. There was a huge explosion which resuled in the eventual deaths of all 6 individuals.

Those killed were;
James Smiley, age 32 years. Buried in Tulsa
Mittie Smiley, age 25 years.Buried in Okmulgee
Katherine Smiley, age 1 year 6 months. Buried in Okmulgee
Herbert Smiley, age 4 years 3 months. Buried in Okmulgee
Martha Ann Singleton, age 55 years. It was reported by emergency personnel that Martha was alive when they arrived and was singing a hymn when they arrived but died a short time later. She is buried in Okmulgee
Floyd Smiley, brother of James died a few days later
and was buried in Tulsa. James grapped the baby and jumped into
a nearby creek in an effort to save her but she died the next day.
His brother Floyd lived for a few more days and was able to
tell what had happened.
It is unknown why the family members were buried in different cemeteries. James? and his brother were buried in what appears to be a Smiley family plot at Rose Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa. The other members are buried in Park Cemetary in Okmulgee. The
owner of the gasoline plant paid for some of the funeral expenses.

Benjamin H Singleton married Lina (last name unknown)
had 4 children
Lucile born in 1910
Anez born in 1913
Authur born Sep. 19, 1916. Hit by a car while riding a bicycle in OKC on Jun 12, 1935. He died of his injuries and is buried at Highland cemetery in Lawton, Ok. He was in the CCC and stationed at Ft. Sill. He was visiting family in OKC at the time of the accident.
George born Oct. 31, 1918 and died Feb. 14, 1998. He is buried in Ardmore, Ok.
This family is shown living in Okmulgee, Ok.
in 1920. My Aunt Mavohlee says some of them were killed in a car wreck and that they are buried in Spencer, Ok. I will verify this
as soon as I can get over there.

I will add more stories as soon as I can get all the details so check back later.
