Sheffield Badminton Club
Sheffield WD Badminton Club plays social non-league badminton on Monday evenings throughout the year, excluding bank holidays.
The badminton is played for enjoyment and exercise in a friendly atmosphere at Sheffield WD Sports and Social Club, Heeley Bank Road, Olive Grove, Sheffield S2 3GF, England.
We play every Monday evening, except Mondays when the venue is closed, which includes the Bank Holidays.
For 2009, the Monday Bank Holidays are 13 April, 4 May, 25 May, 31 August and 28 December 2009.
Exceptional weather has closed the venue on two Mondays in the last 10 years: Sheffield floods on 25 June 2007 and snow on 2 February 2009.
If we get the chance, we will note cancellations as a result of exceptional weather here on this webpage. http://www.webspawner.com/users/sheffieldb/index.html
Heeley Bank Road runs southeast from the Olive Grove Depot (with the road salt storage dome), near to the Charlotte Road / Queens Road crossroads, beside the large B and Q store on Queens Road. The narrow driveway entrance is beside railings around a cricket / football pitch, on the left hand side of the road just after the bus shelter going up Heeley Bank Road, opposite Spurr Street. Follow the narrow driveway round to a car park behind the Sports Hall.
Players arrive at 7.30 - 7.40 pm and play until 9.30 pm. There are three courts in the large, high sports hall. Games normally include mixed and mens doubles, together with some singles and ladies doubles, depending on numbers.
There are a group of regular players, together with others who can play less frequently. Most play all year, while others join for summer badminton during June, July and August, or when visiting Sheffield. Most of the regular players are of intermediate standard, together with a few less experienced players. Players come from all over Sheffield and the surrounding area, including Abbeydale, Anston, Broomhill, Crookes, Crosspool, Dore, Fulwood, Hillsborough, Hunters Bar, Lodge Moor, Malin Bridge, Middlewood, Nether Edge, Oughtibridge, Ranmoor, Stannington and Walkley. Some players car share.
We use Plastic Yonex Mavis 300 shuttles, the same as league badminton. We use the traditional scoring system - scoring points on serve up to 15 without setting, so that everybody gets plenty of games.
The club is open to all adults. The cost is 3 pounds per evening that you play. There is no additional joining or annual fee.
NEW PLAYERS ARE WELCOME.
We have been recently getting around 12 - 16 players for the 3 courts, so we can accept up to two additional regular players of reasonable standard. This number gives everybody plenty of games, as well as a chance to mix up partners.

Sheffield WD Badminton Club is the social Sheffield Badminton Club for Monday evenings. It is a non-profit club, formed over ten years ago, run by members. The rent of the sports hall and cost of the shuttles are smoothed over the year - at present we need an average of 14 players to cover these costs. Balances are carried forward to pay for evenings when fewer players are able to play.
