3. Beginning this DAY 0 as YOUR first day away from your VICE/Bad habit. List the date YOU quit the vice/bad habit, then begin to calculate days as you go away from YOUR bad habit. Start Over again, and again! Do this as many times as it takes YOU to realize that YOUR WILL with GOD's MERCY WILL changes YOU for the BETTER! 4. Remember, You have brought ALL your own bad habits upon your ownself. Now YOU MUST KNOW that the mind reasons, but it does not reason! It acts with automatic precision as a computer exactly as it is stimulated to act. Mind is able to carry on deductive processes, but it has no power of induction. How often this is demonstrated in the case of hypnosis. Give the subject certain premises, no matter how absurd they may be, he will act upon such premises with automatic deduction. But such a mind has NO POWER of synthesis and rational induction. SPIRIT alone has LIGHT in it, and SPIRIT ALONE can work independently and rationally. We have only to observe a little the actions of people the whole world over. Everywhere and all the time, people act more like machines than they do like rational beings. And that is because they are moved by MIND in GROOVES (like sctraches on records), just as they have been taught to act, and habits they have given themselves and their minds. It is the rare individual who does independent thinking, and when one does that it is because his SPIRIT has to some extent become emancipated from the domineering control of mind.
THE FOUR ANTASHKARANS: This subject is so very important that we must devote a little more time to it. We must make ourselves fully acquainted with the mind in all of it faculties and its several modes of action. Mind is divided into four parts, called in Sanskrit ANTASHKARANS, or ANTAHKARAN. This means "inner modes of action". We may say it has four primary attributes, faculties or qualities. These four divisions of mind are named MANAS, CHITT, BUDDHI, and AHANKAR.
(a) MANAS is "mindstuff", per se. It is that which receives and registers impressions through the senses of Smell, Taste, Hearing, and Feeling (touch). Its chief function is TASTE. It tastes, relishes, enjoys or rejects what it doesn't like. Feelings and taste are practically the same thing. All of its reactions are automatic (repeated once accepted...like sctratched records). The MANAS enjoys what it has been trained to like, and its reactions are instantaneous. It either likes a taste or rejects it automatically. It then passes on its findings to the BUDDHI for final judgment.
(b) CHITT is that faculty which takes cognizance of form, beauty, color, rhythm, harmony and perspective. It enjoys those things, and what it doesn't like it rejects. It receives its impressions mostly through the eyes as its instruments of perception. It then passes on its findings to the BUDDHI. In all of these reactions, its processes are as regular and automatic as are the reactions of chemistry.
(c) BUDDHI is the intellect proper, that power the soul uses as its chief instrument of thought. When empowered by spirit, it produces thought. It discriminates and decides. It then passes judgment upon all the findings of the other two faculties. Its decisions are then passed on to the final court of execution, AHANKAR.
(d) AHANKAR accepts the decisions of the other faculties handed on to it by BUDDHI and executes its mandates. It is the executive faculty of mind. It is also the I_NESS of the individual. It is the faculty by which the individual differentiates self from all else, and it is the faculty which enables the individual to distinguish between his own interests and that of others. It is the faculty which, when exaggerated, becomes vanity or egotism.
To sum up the above, SPIRIT changes the MATERIAL MIND: MANAS-receives and tastes, CHITT-takes notices of form and beauty, BUDDHI-discriminates and decides, AHANKAR-executes orders.
This leads us to one of the most important and most practical of all the facts and operations of the mind. The mind has not only four fundamental faculties or attributes but it has five destructive modes of action which manifest themselves when the above-mentioned faculties become disarranged, abnormal or perverted when NOT CONTROL within the SPIRIT of GOD. These five destructive modes are perversions of the normal faculties due to the downard impulses of maya, the world of matter and senses. That is to say, those very faculties which were designed by the Creator for man's use may become so perverted by misuse that they become destructiveinstead of constructive, bad instead of good. We call them the five destructive passions. It is extremely important that we understand them. We may think of them as diseased conditions of the mind.
When the mind is working normally in its legitimae spheres of action, it is carrying on the work it was intended to do. But when the least perversion of its normal faculties takes place, these five destructive modes take possession of one or more or all of them, and control the mind. So long as SPIRIT controls the mind, the four faculties perform their proper function and these passions cannot manifest themselves. But when the mind runs wild, out of control, under the impulse of one or more of the five passions, it generally heads for destruction (like a car in drive without a driver heading for a tree, or a ship with it's captain locked in the cabin by 5 pirates). These five destructive passions are KAM, KRODH, LOBH, MOH, AHANKAR. In English they are SEX passion (which has become lust), ANGER, GREED, ATTACHMENT TO MATERIAL THINGS, and VANITY. These five passions really include all other evil moods of mind which can be thought of. These passions take possession when mind is allowed to run wild, out of the control of the SPIRIT.
Fire is a good servant. But the moment it is out of control, it may become very destructive. It is the same with the mind. Generally the more useful and powerful an instrument is when properly controlled, the more destructive it may become when out of control. It is so with mind. It is the most powerful instrument available to spirit, but it must be controlled.
Let us not condemn nature, but try to understand and obey her. She is our best friend if we first learn to obey. Understanding her, we may work in close cooperation with her to our very great advantage. It may be assumed that all pain and all suffering, mental or physical, which men are ever called upon to endure, have as their chief functions to drive us toward a more perfect cooperation with nature. If only we could learn that lesson, it would save us many a ruined life, many a heartache, and many a wrected body.. But so long as we do not obey nature, we must go on suffering endless ills.
We marvel at the powers of electricity. ONE mind has enough electical energy to light up the city of New York. We stand in awe before the gigantic energy let loose at the explosion of a ton of TNT. We find ourselves helpless before the onward sweep of a mighty cyclone or avalanche. But all these forces are feeble when compared with the fully awakened powers of The MIND. SATAN has NO POWER (the ONLY POWER SATAN has is a MYTH)! Since the DAY of Pentecoastal Jesus WON this Universe back to 7 HEAVENS, and this Earth is SATAN's jail cell. Human beings are ONLY flesh doing their BEST to SURVIVE because of their SPIRIT's being locked inside a Material body.
Whatever YOU DO right or wrong? By refusing to use the limits GOD places on YOU, and by assertiing YOUR WILL with that setting YOUR OWN standards of rigtht and wrong is NOT SIN that can have you believing that any mistake YOU MAKE will get you to HELL. HELL is NOT meant for people with faith in the MERCY of GOD (no matter what YOU DO)! ONCE YOU LEARN to use YOUR WILL, will IMPROVE YOUR Life honestly with this change!
After Reviewing the teachings of prominent thinkers throughout the centuries, the Encyclopoedia Britannica states that from the time of Greek philosopher SOCRATES to the 20th Century, there have been "repeated debates over just what goodness and the standard of right and wrong might be".
For Example, the Sophists were a prominent group of Greek teachers in the 5th Century B.C.E. They taught that standards of right and wrong were determined by popular opinion. Said one such teacher: "Whatever things seem just and fine to each city, are just and fine for that city, so long as it thinks them so". Most States in the United States DO this.
Immanuel Kant, a renowned 18th Century philosopher, expressed..."focused on the individuals right to choose for himself or herself, so long as it does not violate the rights of others". Jesus taght, "All things that YOU want men to do to you, you also must likewise do to them". We must have our own good values, know what is right and what is wrong, good and bad, and hold firmly to high moral principles All the time!
"By Iron, Iron itself is sharpened. So One man sharpens the face of another (proverbs 27:17). When two people bring ironlike moral strenght to a table, they can help each other to grow, and bonds stronger as true friends begin. True friends are those who help us to stay headed in the right direction and who correct us when we are about to do unwise things.
"Wine is ridicular, intoxicating liquor is boisterous, and everyone going astray by it (them) is not wise (proverbs 20:1). An enjoyable gift is good only when used properly, taking of too much is NOT good! Clearly, Drinking to the point of drunkenness is condemned...it bites just like a serpent, and it secretes poison just like a viper". Excessive drinking bites like a poisonous serpent causing sickness, mental confusion, even unconsciousness.
Do NOT come to be among heavy drinkers of wine, among those who are gluttonous eaters of flesh. For a Drunkard and a glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe one with mere rags (pro. 23:20,21). A Key to avoiding the dangers of alcohol abouse is knowing where to draw the line between moderation and overindulgence. Each one must personally know his own limits and practice and stay within those limits in dealing with ALL THINGS from sex, to falling into the traditional limits about which man uses as a measuring cup for ALL when he claims that YOU go to HELL. God has given each individual the WILL to use of his OWN WILL of judgement. SIN is in the FLESH, and NO FLESH shall enter heaven. Only spirits that by FAITH WILL of being forever WILL be in heaven!
Safeguard practical wisdom and thinking ability for YOURSELF, and they will prove to be life to your SOUL/Spirit and charm to your throat (proverbs 3: 21, 22).
Any amount of alcohol that unduly impairs your judgement and dulls your thinking ability to control YOUR WILL is too much! Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages just before attending Church meetings, when sharing in the ministry, and when caring for other spiritual responsiblilites.
If YOU are interested in making NEW FRIENDS, ask yourself? Who are their friends? The Type of Close associates someone has tells much about the person himself! It is WISE to also consider not only how potential friends treat us but also how they treat others, particularly those from whom they have nothing to gain. Getting to know someone's and YOUR OWN true character requires patience and skill, as well as time to observe the person or yourself in real life.
