A record-breaking number of Hispanic viewers joined more 50,000 devoted fans who attended Univision's star-studded tribute concert in honor of slain Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla.
The concert took place last month at Reliant Stadium in Houston, the site of Selena's last concert in 1995.
The telecast's 35.9 household rating makes it the highest-rated and most-viewed Spanish-language TV special ever. It was also the No. 1 program -- regardless of language -- among adults 18-34 in Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco, and tied for first place in New York.
The three-hour musical tribute featured international music stars performing some of Selena's biggest hits, among them Mexican pop star Thalía, who opened the concert with her interpretation of Amor prohibido.
Other performers included Ana Gabriel, Paulina Rubio, Pepe Aguilar, Banda el Recodo, Gloria Estefan, Alejandra Guzmán, Mariana Seoane, Pablo Montero, Alicia Villarreal, Aleks Syntek and Fey.
The concert included several video montages recounting Selena's origins in Texas, her discography and her international success.
In one of the most touching moments of the evening, Selena's brother A.B. Quintanilla and his group, Kumbia Kings, performed a duet with his sister in a specially remixed version of her hit Baila esta cumbia.
Another emotional moment came when the entire stadium audience got a chance to participate in the grand finale. A video of Selena performing Como la flor played on giant video screens accompanied by Los Dinos, her former band. As the audience waved white roses, all the performers returned to the stage to sing the chorus along with a 55-member children's choir, closing the show with a stunningly moving tribute.
Capitalizing on the success of the telecast, EMI Latin plans a May 10 release of the all-star tribute concert CD, Selena ˇVive! featuring 12 tracks with some of the evening's most notable performances.
Meanwhile, TeleFutura's prime-time Selena special also made ratings history.
On March 31, the 10th anniversary of Selena's passing, the tribute gave the network its largest audience ever. That night, TeleFutura delivered 1.2 million more Hispanic viewers than competitor Telemundo, ranking as the nation's No. 2 broadcast network among all Hispanic demographics that night, behind only sister network Univision.
