West Branch

hhovalsmall picture

Well, I rode my bike to West Branch
I went up and down those hills
I ate my lunch at the Herbert Hoover Musuem
Let me tell you, that was a thrill

Then I turned myself around
and rode right back to Rivertown
The sun in my eyes was going down...

But there were shadows in the mailbox
Quiet trees by the street
Cats lounging on my front porch
With six round eyes to meet...

Sanctuary, Friday night
The folksinger sits at the bar on my right
He's selling albums of his latest release
and cassettes with his portrait on each

And as I wait for him to play
I find my mind far away
I wonder what I'm doing here
And I wonder where I'll be next year

Maybe join the Navy for a four-year stint
Hope my friends don't take the hint
I've got nothing against peace
I've got nothing against the freeze
But, tell me, why is peace so tense?

Why is peace so tense,
and why does it always need defense?
It gives me no peace to think about peace
Not the kind we march and yell about

Why fight for peace
It just don't seem to make sense
Tell me, why is peace so tense?
