DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM

The sponsorship fund established for Tibetan regufees has two programs:

Educational Assistance:

Educational expenses for the Tibetan children to attend their local schools and young monks and nuns to live and study in a monastic institution is approximately $20 per month. Sponsors send an annual payment of $240 to the Program Director, who will then forward the funds directly to the families. In this way, both the international money transfer and the efficient distribution of sponsorship funds are ensured.

In order to provide continuity and to facilitate long-term planning, sponsors are requested to make a long-term commitment to children's education, optimally through the completion of grade school or high school. Sponsors are matched by the program in the U.S. with children in particular need of assistance. Children are also matched to the duration of sponsor's desired commitments.

The entire sponsorship dues of $20 per month goes to a child, or a young monk or nun for their educational expenses. Sponsors are requested but not required, to send an additional $1 per month to help defray the administrative expenses such as mailing costs for the program.

Assistance to Families in Need:

As new refugees arrive in India and Nepal from Tibet, the plots of land allocated to families have become smaller. As a result, many families are chronically undernourished. Families with members who are elderly, disabled, or infirm face particular difficulties.

Sponsors can support families-in-need by pledging $20 per person per month. We will select families in greatest need of assistance for you. Each case is reviewed annually to ensure that the sponsors' contributions are going to the neediest families and are having the greatest impact possible.

As in the Educational Assistance program, payments are sent annually to the Program Director, who will then forward the funds directly to the families. In this way, sponsors are assured that all money reaches their families. Furthermore, the entire contribution is received by the sponsored family. A supplemental donation of $1 per family per month is requested, but not required, to help defray administrative expenses.

If you pledge to sponsor more than three years, you will receive the name, address, photo and biographical information on your sponsored individual(s).
